Games Workshop Policy Changes Coming Games Workshop is stepping up its restrictions on online sales. In fact, according to this bit, GW has informed online retailers that starting June 15th online sales will be stopping in order to help protect the brick and mortar shops. check out the latest...... Here is a link to the new policies. www.dropbox.com/sh/wn5gq2srlbvxs6l/mhXkq4nVgZvia Soosas from the Faeit 212 inbox Miniwargaming just posted that there is a new GW document that will prevent the online sale of their products starting June 15th. I already knew this was the direction GW was going but I still find it extremely disapointing. Thought the community should know

They may be shooting themselves in the foot, but they're shooting independent retailers in the face, which I think is the goal. If this is actually true, it's probably because GW's online presence simply cannot compete with other online stores that actually offer discounts, so GW stuff is priced nearly reasonably. I still can't believe they're banning all online independent sales, though.

I wonder if this will stop The War Store, since that's technically over the phone.

Web stores are cheaper. I don't mind brick and mortar shops going under if it means I get cheaper stuff.
Now if GW didn't have ridiculously over priced stuff, I might be able to afford to alter my viewpoint, at the current level of extortion. I can't.

as a consumer ---
if they drop their prices by 20% to match the online retailers current prices it will not bother me that much although I do feel sorry for the retailers like Gifts4Geeks who I have spent a lot of money with over the last 6 months.
if I owned games workshop ---
I would do the same and sell the products within the games workshop brand it does make good business sense apart from the lost sales from hobby centres not owned by GW.

If I was in charge of GW, I would seriously consider only doing distribution and letting the independent retailers do all the selling. Let them set prices to match their regions. If a business is healthy, has good competition, and has a good consumer base, their market has a way of handling itself.
GW going after retailers is more or less the same as the RIAA refusing to adapt to the digital age of media.

And to be fair, we all order online because it's more affordable, a symptom of GW's pricing. Instead of curing the disease, they're just running around shooting everyone who's getting sick.

This particular bit changes nothing for The Warstore (or any other American outlets). US stores have been subject to this exact restriction for over a decade. It hasn't killed them yet, the Canadian stores should be able to adapt as well.
The only part of the changes that affect US stores are the prohibition on opening boxes and parting out the bitz.
Not saying this isn't a d*** move on GW's part, just that it's being blown out of proportion.

Am I the only one who sees any good in this? A local store that used to sell GW stuff near me had to stop, because they couldn't compete with the online prices. They nearly went under last year, but restocked with some GW products, and due to 40k being the most prominent game in the area, they managed to keep going, as they are only competing against GWS for brick and mortar stores locally. I was speaking to him recently and found out that it's a family business that he has inherited from his father, and he's worried they may have to close soon if they can't boost profits. With this people like him actually have a chance to continue trading, and the downside is if you want to buy online it's got to be more expensive or Ebay...

you say that about online retailers vs bricks and mortar shops but Gifts4Geeks have bricks and mortar stores as well as the webpage so they still have the overheads of staff and premesis but at the same time offer 20-25% discount on all games workshop items. why can the bricks and mortar shops not do that? (uk this is)
