I promised a good friend of mine I would post a step-by-step tutorial on how to paint rust and weathering and other such effects, so lets begin with rust,
This method of 'rusting' is so very easy to do, and requires no mixing or particularly special techniques, but still works really nicely
The paints you will need are as follows; Chaos Black (for undercoat, so spray or pot is fine), Scorched Brown, Terracotta (no longer available through GW but Dark Flesh works just as well), Macharius Solar Orange Foundation, Asurman Blue wash, Devlan Mud wash and Boltgun Metal.
You will also need a really rubbish brush

First off paint the whole thing evenly (ish) with Scorched brown
next load up your brush with terracotta/Dark Flesh and attack your model as if you are stippling with too much paint on your brush (for those unfamiliar with stippling, just kinda stab the model with the brush) don't even think about neatness!
Now you do the same thing again but with the Solar Orange
"but it looks awful"? I hear you cry, fear not, the next step is like magic... Wait until it is completely dry ( I can't stress the 'completely' enough) then liberally wash the whole thing with Asurman Blue
Much better see? If you want it to look really old you can do another wash of the Blue, but I wouldn't do more than two....
Now we go around all the raised details with a little Devlan Mud, you will need a decent brush for this to look right, you just want to accentuate the shadows
When the washes are completely dry, go back to your mashed brush and sparingly stipple some Boltgun Metal around areas of battle damage/ wear and your done
Next will be weathering paintwork.
