 Pointers would be nice.
« Thread Started on Oct 31, 2009, 9:26am »

I have been challenged to my first apoc game ever, so i rushed out to buy the book, when glalncing through it I realised that I have probably handed my behind to my challenger.
Btw its a fluffy game and not hardcore tourney, I am not playing to win so is neither my challenger, but we are both going to try our best just to make it fun.

First I am going to give you the premesis for the game.

The game is going to be played someday between x-mas and new year so I have a little time to tweak my army.

Its a 6k apoc/city fight game, where the main objective is a cathedral in the middle of the table.

We can only have one super heavy.

I am bringing my renegade marines and my traitor guards.

He is bringing Black templar and daemon hunter.

The problem I have is that I am so bored with my marines, but I still have to use them to fill out the points, but I realised I have about $700 to burn on Guards to get it more fun.

The questions i would like to get some answers to are:

What tactics is good versus Black templars with my armies, I have never battled against them, havent seen the codex, and have no idea what my challenger is bringing?
What should I get to my Guards just to make it more fun?

At this date my armies look something like this.

Imp guard

1 command squad
3 inf platoons (all have three squads)
2 10 man strong ogryn squads (love ogryns)
1 10 man strong ratling squad (love them too)
2 carapace vet squads with chimeras
1 demolisher
1 Leman russ bt.
3 commissars (calling them demagouges using the same rules)

Chaos marines

Its easier to say what I dont have as I have about 6k points of them.

I dont have any defilers or oblits (dont like them, fluffwise), and as a pure slaanesh player, I only have sonic marines as cult marines.

I am thinking about buying a Stormlord or a Baneblade, but I am not sure.
What else do you think I should get, just to make it more fun? Fluffwise I would like to use the chaos marines as elite strike force and the guards as the main force.

Well, for BT you can either try to shoot them from far away, or try to out-cc them. Don't noise marines have that fancy two fire-type bolter?

For your IG, I suggest more LRBTs. And depending on the size of the table (which I assume will be ~4x8) get some manticore awesomeness.

use your 3 platoons and your company command to take the infantry shield formation it'll give you some good assets.

More tanks is the quickest and easiest way, the fact that you only have two means they'll get smoked pretty quickly in a big game, more LRBTs, maybe a LR Executioner. An artillery battery is also pretty fun, and vets with meltaguns riding in valkyries.

The sonics marines can get the super awesome assult bolters, plus they get an awesome assult heavy bolter and the sonic champion can get a flamer of doom. I guess the sonics are better in cc than the Black templars as they have a tendency to hit first when getting in close with Space marines.

I am not going gouda (cheesy) and have loads of sorcerers with the slaanesh specific psychic power as it dosent feel fluffy. Loads of insane megalomanics in a chaos army feels strange.

Hmm where can i read up on infantry shield formation, it isnt in the apoc book or on GW:s official site.

and how does the valk fair in a city fight as there is so much dangerous terrain. We agreed that there should be loads of ruins on the larger than average board.

So its time to go on a shopping spree to get some more tanks and some and artillery. What about a super heavy? Do they fair well in city fights?

It may be in the Reload book, then.

Reds can tell you about Apoc with IG...

It's in reload, it gives you defense lines, on my co-ordinates and scheduled bombardment,

so that's 36" of aegis lines

the ability to take a ld test and call an orbital bombardment on any voxcaster, suicide guard ftw.

and to choose 3 turns and mark a location in each turn where a strike will land.

Very effective.

Black Templars are better up close than normal Marines, but worse at range. Shoot them apart if at all possible.

The Emperor's Shield Infantry Company from Apoc: Reload is one of my favorite Formations for any Army. I wouldn't take IG in Apoc without it.

It you've got the time and ability for some extensive Conversion, a Colossus or two would probably be great. Basilisks are generally good in Apoc, where you usually have enough room to Deploy them somewhere that their Minimum Range isn't too much of a disadvantage.

The BaneBlade is the All-Rounder of the Super-Heavies. It's not Amazing at any one thing, but it is still very good at a number of things. Like the basic Leman Russ, it's hard to wrong with one of these. On the other hand, the StormLord would provide a Transport for all those Ogryn, which would be pretty cool.

So, to summarize:
- Check your Infantry Units against the Requirements for the Emperor's Shield. Pick up anything you need to fill that out. I think you've already got it, but check to be sure.
- Grab a Super-Heavy
- Pick up a couple more Russes. The basic Model and the Executioner are probably your best bets.

Doesn't the stormlord also provide that ridiculously sexy mega-bolter?

Yep. It pretty much makes anything without a 2+ Save more or less disappear as I recall.

If you have agreed to Buying Stratigic Assets, take Flank March, for a First game it is Deadly! I personally like using it for Tank Busting units and grabing those Oppinant objectives.

This is how the list will look roughly.

Guards

3 basilisks
1 demolisher
2 Battle tanks
3 armoured sentinels w lascannons
1 bane wolf
3 Infantry platoons 3 squads each
Command squad
2 Lord commissar
3 heavy weapon squads lascannons
Stormlord

CSM all slaanesh

Daemon Prince w wings
CSM termilord Blissgiver
6*6 CSM terminators
4*12 CSM Marines
2*6 Noise marines
Land raider

I decided not to bring the vets/ogryns/ratlings as i needed the armour. I wanted to bring my minor daemons, but as I am facing an Inquisition army I decided against it. Grey knights vs daemons is quite unfun, believe me.

Otherwise is there anything else I should change?

/cheers

Unless you're right up on your points limit, you should consider Creed. Outflanking a stormlord could be one of the coolest things you can do.

Can't you just do that with the Flank March Strategic Asset anyhow?

...yes...

But not without taking that as one of the assets.
