Hello.
In my "Fallout" phase I am in at the moment I've decided to work on some terrain too. Mainly ruins.
I've decided to use standardisation on them so I can combine them anyway I want, with the exceptions of floors.
I've decided to build a suburbian/small village commercial center inspired buildings. To start with.
I've decided to start with quantity over quality.
So on with some pics.

When you see this pic you might think -Hey, MGK why didn't you make it possible to stand on the elevetar shaft roof? It would make a great sniper place. Well I did think about it and realised that if I dint, I can build add-ons and switch them. Therefore making the building even more generic. I am currently building a "raider" crows nest, indicating that this building is occupied by raiders. Then I aim to build just an ordinary elevator roofing, indicating a civilian building that is unoccupied. Later I am considering a flight tower, and voila - a airfield building. What cant be seen in the pics is that the flooring is removable so you can get to the minis below. I was considering building up the corners to make the building look fortifed, but then realised that I could build them as separate pieces and add them if I needed them. This way the ruins wouldn´t have to look the same all the time. Here is another set-up. Intent to show the back side ruins from the first pics, set up to make another ruin.

Looking really good MGK! love that corridor shot in the last picture. You took your time, so i would say you have some pretty good quality in those pieces!

A good size and a few levels, I think this will turn out great!

Thanks both of you. @kriegeirk: I tried to make sure that the build is as good as I can manage, with lower quality I am mostly considering the paint job. At the moment there will only be a layer of grey primer. When I have manage to assemble a few more sets I will probably start painting them a little more proper.

Still looks good! What did you use if you dont mind my asking, I've been getting the urge to start building terrain and my table. It looks like display board?

I guess it is known by many names. I call it foamcore. We use it a lot in my job and I snatch them away when they are to go into recycling bins.
I am trying out to remove the outer layer of card t get rid of the neat surface. I im pretty sure the more rough card below will look more concrete (and colour will atatch easier).

It was actually quite easy. Give it a try, I peel of a sheet in just a few seconds.

About how long did it take to make those buildings? I'm thinking of making buildings out of foam sheets and was wondering how long it took.

The thing that takes time is making "the mold". How high shall everything be? (I use 5.5 cm for innerwalls) How far from the edge shall windows start? (I use 3cm, exception the big top windows that started from the middle)) How far shall it be between the windows? ( I use 3cm) What sizes for the window?
Try sketching fasades out on sheets of paper and try them out with a mini to make them fit your opinion.
When you have everything prepared and made som small ruins making big doesn´t take that long.
The big part of the ruin is about 4-5 hours, most of it spent waiting for glue to dry.

Thanks for the scaling references and dimensions. That was my next question!

Thank you. Today as I started buildning the second large ruin I discovered a thing I had forgotten about. While doing the front both layers of windows/door are measured from the middle. Foamcore: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foamcore

Time for some pics. This is just a group shot with some WH40K dudes advancing. This is a WIP raiders lookout point that slips in the elevator shaft. This pics show of a part of the latest ruin. There are two entrances. One on the left and one on the right. Inside you can see an innerwall with two small backdoors. There is also one more wall dividing it into two small shops (rooms). That wall has been breeched. Beside the sentinel is a billboard made by the cutouts from the large windows. By glueing the sticks into the "ground" I can easily change the pic. Making the different billboards will be fun. A photo of the breached wall seen through the window. I am considering two options with this last ruins. Building a intact floor that is removable. Or making most of it fallen in and in a more ruin state.

i would go with the in tact removable floor! just make it so that there are some barricades in there i suppose. I think not-broken-structures are underrated... not saying broken down stuff isnt cool. but its just my opinion. you should have a mix.
i love your stuff. if i had to make this it would be out of coardboard.. which takes a LOT of time to get the edges filled worked out nicely. please keep us updated!
good work soldier!

Thank you. loempiaketzer: It was a long time since I saw you posting in this forum. Glad to see you back. I've planned on a un-ruined large building, but the problem would be removing roofing and floors to get to the bottom when I need moving them. Especially if there are models on the roof and second floor. But as a solution I am plannning on making one with the walls intact and the roofing and floors broken down as if they've been hit by a dud.

that would be cool indeed! but still youd have the problem with moving the guys in the building i guess. So far, i made some undamaged structures, but they were all so small you could push the models in and take them out without removing a floor or something. I think, if someone would make a larger building of lets say, 2 floors, you need to be able to remove the top just so that you can move models inside of it. other thing that might work with this is using the kind of structuring that you already have. the extended upper floor with the pillars. This way, models can easily exces the ground floor while not needing to remove the top, then, when they get inside, youd only need to remove the upper floor. it might just solve some litle problems... o well... im woulkd be very delighted so see your take on this as im planning some kind of building myself! Hopefully i will post some pics of myself later on this week as i have been building some stuff again!
thanks for the welcome back by the way! However, my presence will be limited as the soccer season is starting tomorow, i gained 8 kilo's in the summer and i have walked only from the couch to my fridge the entire summer-break... so wish me luck. Sweet lady-lard is going to get it!!!!

White tape (apox 2in wide) work well as an easy way to cover flat buildings even with the lines it looks like pre fab concrete sections
