Quick update, here is a picture of the completed Cadian Kaskrin squad. This one took a bit longer than the usual squads due to the two types of camo on them. I think they look like they were worth the effort in the end.

Hang on. There are 11 men in the squad, aren't there?
Good work. They look amazing. The weathing technique on the vehicles makes them look really gritty.

Good spot, yes there are eleven, I had painted a choice of special weapons for a bit of flexibility, there is a flamer and a grenade launcher.

Not been up to much over the past couple of days, been north in the Shires doing the Christmas thing. Here is the current state of the work bench, old style heavy bolter teams stripped of paint awaiting painting, some heavy stubber teams that require a large amount of conversion work and finally a Battalion of British Infantry from the American War of Independance by the Perry's from Foundry. A chance find at home at the parents house was a huge pile of old GW bits from when I first started gaming, amongst them was Man O War ships, Empire, Skaven and a huge stock of old GW IG. Managed to find most of the last chancers intact including Warrior Woman and a pile of 2nd edition sentinals that could do with some conversion work to bring them up to standard. ;D

Todays update is a kit bash to create a Chimera AVLB, this will give the battle group some much needed gap crossing capability for those larger games. The base kit was a chimera chassis fitted with 1:35 scale King Tiger tracks to give the vehicle some grip and width. The back was leveled out with plasticard and an engine deck was added from the Revell 1:40 scale M48 scissor bridge tank. The back has been weighted with some lead ballast to keep the chassis steady during launching. The scissor bridge and the launch equipment is one of the most troublesome kits I have assembled in some time, several components were missing and had to be fabricated from plasticard and steel pin. All that is left to do is to paint and weather the AVLB. Going to experiment with MIG filters and pigments as well as paint chips and scratches. AVLB in transit with bridge loaded. AVLB deploying the scissor bridge Bridge deployed AVLB crossing the bridge which is wide enough to accommodate most Imperial Guard track widths with the exception of super heavies. View of the AVLB showing hinges, engine deck, launch mechanism and stowage.

It looks scary big...
Really groovy adding some background mechanics to your collection - looking forward to seeing the completed/painted version!

Good find on the classic models. I found a similar classic 2nd edition psyker; it could make an excellent Primaris Psyker.
Brilliant modelling with the bridge laying machine.

A bit of progress post the New Years hangover. Been concentrating on finishing off heavy weapon teams as I have been lacking in painted heavy bolter teams for some time now. These ones have been painted in the usual scheme but based in the open, the next crews will be in hard cover fire positions. Another Heavy Stubber conversion. Lascannon team well concealed in some bushes. I used medical gauze to make the cam net and added some model foliage. And last up is works in progress on the AVLB hull, just finished the initial paint scheme, its now awaiting painting of tracks, markings and the stowage. On completion of that then the weathering can start.

Gabriel Lupus: I do hope to do some other support vehicles for the battle group much like the old FV432 series. So I am looking at recovery, command, signal, medical, engineer and logistic variants. Col Corbane did an excellent ambulance Chimera that I may just have to emulate! Magg: I bought the tracks from Model Zone for about £5. They are 1:35 scale king tiger tracks made by Hobby Boss. Really easy to fit. Cheminhaler: He is now sat on the painting table having been stripped of his previous color scheme. Thanks all for comments on the AVLB.

This will be the last of the updates for a couple of weeks due to returning to work and exams. Managed to complete the AVLB hull, the scissor bridge requires washing and weathering.

Your stuff is looking great! The AVLB Chimera is especially schmexy, and your weapon teams are pure awesome. Is that a Necromunda Escher heavy stubber that you used in the conversion?

I have to say, your weathering looks really good - this is really going to be a beast of a model when it's complete with the folded bridge.
As for other "background vehicles" etc, have you considered some of the Forgeworld models, such as the Power Lifter Sentinel?
And those Cadian Heavy Bolters... God-Emperor how I miss the old Cadians...

Trooper one nine seven four, that is indeed a heavy stubber robbed from a Escher heavy. I have a small stash of these I ordered before GW got rid of its bitz service. Gabriel Lupus, I have looked at the FW range, the powerlifter looks ripe for conversion, I am thinking of mating it onto a small tracked chassis from the ork halftrack buggy thing to make a small rough terrain fork lift type vehicle (I have a big IG Logistic terrain, vehicle, objective marker project in mind for this). The next set of vehicles will be salamanders built with the old metal predator turrets which have arrived from a recent bought of bidding on ebay! This will finish off the salamander squadron. Then I can focus on some Chimera command variants. Thank you for the kind coments, now back off to exam revision!

How do you apply the pigments? I plan to apply them dry with a brush and than carefully spray on a thin coat of varnish to keep them on the hull, but I am not sure if this would spoil the effect. Cheers! -Magg

You want to varnish the model before you apply the powders, as varnishing them will make them spotty and clumpy... Or at least that's what happened the one time I used powders and then applied the varnish over them... Anyone else have any experience?

I normally apply the powders with a stiff brush and previously I varnished them although it was very hit and miss as the wretched stuff dissolved. This one was done with MIG pigment fixer, which is a little pricey but seems to be working although I am yet to fully master application of MIG powders using terps and fixer. Hey ho, an excuse to build more vehicles and paint them!

Not really sure what I would use it now, it was originally knocked up from a plastic land speeder with metal missile pods and it was used under 3rd edition with the Vehicle Design Rules from chapter approved, it hasn't been on the field of battle for a while now. I would count that as a Vulture, with that rotary Punisher cannon on the nose. Nice work! Its nice to see a fully painted Guard unit, especially with the old models. I have a unit or two, but nothing like yours. I imagine a website like Bob n Bootz, Second Hand Models would set your heart a flutter.
