Hail fellow Commissars!
I was graciously gifted an exceptional force of IG units in order to finally get me into WH40k. I have been a Fantasy player for a few years, but never really poked my head into the 40k side as it was far too expensive for me to handle two armies.
Here's what I got!
4x Chimera 2x Battle Tank 2x Demolisher 1x Cadian Battleforce 2x Vandetta 1x Manticore Bunch of other random goodies!
Yes, yes... I know... What a nice gift! I am rather excited to start learning the ins and outs of the army. I really like the idea of rolling around with a lot of tanks.
I will be looking for any advice and any fun, but competitive list building ideas this community has to offer. As far as my extremely limited knowledge goes this looks like the purest source of IG knowledge out there. I intend to tap into it!
I am looking to make 1250 and 1500 point lists for a few games coming up. From what I have gotten from the few threads I have looked through at work I have come up with some "cores" of the lists, but still not fully sure on what to take with everything.
School me!
Thanks ;D

And... my first question:
Is the Multi-laser + Heavy Flamer setup on Chimeras pretty much the only way to take them? I never see any lists with Bolters on them.
Would like to know so that I don't have to keep magnetizing my guns for my chimeras as it is beyond the point of annoying with such small areas to work with!

actually not really.
Multilaser is good because of strength 6. Heavy flamer is good against horde.
This means that multilaser/ heavy flamer makes the chimera all round ok.
If you play eldar for example, You could be better off taking a dual heavy bolter. Means no armor saves for them.
Shooting squads that use a chimera as protection but don't intend to move a lot closer to the enemy can benefit from multilaser/ heavy bolter. having range and not moving means both weapons can be used.
Remember that a hull heavy flamer chimera in your fireline can be golden too. If you keep one at your center you can use it to flame enemy squads that are broken through or too close for comfort. if nothing comes close, just use the multilaser or heavy bolter turret
So you see, multilaser heavy flamer chimera's are mostly taken because they are more versatile. The others are more specialised, but against the right opponent they can be quite good.

I have one that is magnetized so I can switch between HHF and HHB (Hull Heavy Flamer and Hull Heavy Bolter). Both have ML turrets. They're to old ones though and they're a bit harder to magnetize (the turret that is) so the two new ones I'm going to build might even get magnetized turret guns. But it's like Peter said, ML+HF is the most versatile and therefor most often used. Most players wouldn't have a problem letting you play one for the other though, as long as you make it clear before the game and don't change your mind.
As a general tip, get some more infantry. You're going to want a lot more for veteran squads, both command squads and all other sorts. I prefer a mix of different models (but I have my crazy project of getting at least one from each regiment GW has produced except Forge World) so spice things up but also so that you can benefit from all the heavy weapons you get in the battle force.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. Thank you DadCRO for the link I currently have 3 squads and a CCS. So that is enough to fill my 1250 list with 4 Chimeras (1 CCS and 3 Vet Squads). My current list to learn with consists of: CCS + Chimera Vet Squad + Chimera Vet Squad + Chimera Vet Squad + Chimera LRBT LRBT Vandetta Vandetta Currently working on the weapon setup with the LRBTs and Vet Squads. Debating between Meltas and Plasma for the Vets. Not fully certain on the LRBTs yet.

Well since you have more than one Vet squad there is no reason why you can't have both...

That's one hell of a gift! Why can't I get gifts like that?

Welcome to the IGMB, SYPHONiCIDE! *Takes a tissue sample from the new member so that clones may be produced as required* You may thank me later. Or not. *Confiscates the new conscript's gifted Guard army and issues him with an inch square piece of soggy cardboard and a completely depleted AA battery* Use this equipment to go and take down that very, very angry Squiggoth over there. GO! GO! GO! Upon successful completion of your mission you will have your gifted Guard army returned to you, and you may be allowed to petition the Munitorum for better equipment. Please enjoy your stay on the board. Beware of other members *Cough*Envoy!*Cough* trying to steal your organs (hence why a clone may be required), and remember that sanity is optional when venturing into the Underhive section of the board.
