Viability of Al-Rahem Outflanking List

So I'm in the process of building a Renegades army using the IG codex, and I want to do something different from the cookie-cutter competitive lists one sees...everywhere. I don't care about competitiveness because, well, I don't compete.

So anyways I'm thinking of using a hybrid foot/ mech army with a gunline supported by LRBT's or bassies deploying as normal, and an all chimera-mounted Al-Rahem platoon outflanking with the help of an Astropath. The Al-Rahem platoon will be hosing the enemy side/rear with multi-lasers, heavy bolters/ flamers and probably plasma's firing from the hatches. Hopefully this will force my opponent to falter on deciding which is the greater threat and ultimately fail to deal with either.

My gunline will consist of the usual power-blobs (commie, power weapons, AC/GL) of 20-30 men each, and probably a few las HWS's receiving orders from the nearby PCS's. I'd like to have HWS's as well as bassies/ russes as a sort of backup against lance weapons (lance weapons are really what kept me from going with an entirely mech list btw). As mentioned earlier my CCS will have an Astropath, and If points allow I'd also like to take Straken for obvious gunline anchor-ing purposes, and maybe melta-vets in a valk to outflank and help deal with Land Raiders and the like.

Of course this will be a pricey list points-wise, probably only viable in the neighbourhood of 1850+. But if possible I'd like to have a stripped-down variant of this army for those lean 1500pt games...

So what do you think? Would something like this be viable? And if so what would you reccomend? All opinions, comments, advice greatly appreciated, thanks in advance...

I know a couple of people who have had success with this general concept at 2K or so. I'm not really familiar with their Armies, though, so beyond a very broad "it can work", I can't help that much.

It is more viable the cheaper you make the units in your army. Cut upgrades down to a bare minimum, aside from an Astropath and special weapons, to put the maximum number of actual guns on the board as a considerable threat from your main force. That makes the outflanking force that much more deadly. An outflanking platoon also give Guard a good option for taking objectives we'd otherwise have trouble getting to without a Valk/Ven ferrying troops. The only downside is that, aside from the Chimeras, the platoon isn't actually very shooty except against other infantry units. I think the main threat from this kind of move is a psychological one.

Trickstick had a list up the other day.. (2 days ago, i think) which was 1500 points, and in my opinion had a very viable Rahem component in it.. Though I don't think it was chimera mounted, since he does LRMBT + Foot Infantry...

Might wanna have a look at that..?

There are many masterful army builders on here.

I can't remember the last time someone posted in the 'Army List' section and Krasimirova didn't respond with solid advice.

Also read McCaptain's, Westrider's, Treadiculous' lists and responses. These gentleman know their stuff. There are others but these come to mind.

Can't valks not outflank units unless they have scouts as well?

I think you're thinking of units with scouts can't scout with a transport without scout, but if either the unit or the transport has infiltrate or scouts (or the ability to outflank) the transport can outflank containing the unit.

Thinking of it.. You could scout move your Valk/Detta and then scout move your penal legion out of it..

Not sure if this is viable, but since you don't declare moves in 40k, I can't see anything wrong with it..

Not sure how the penal legion trick would help you thou, hard to plan with their random rules, thou 30 rending attacks on the charge should ruin most closely parked tanks day..

Actually this might be illegal but, it is a fun thought..

You basically get a bonus Movement Phase for Units with Scout. So if the Valk didn't go Flat Out, then the Penal Legion could Disembark. They wouldn't be able to move further than that with the Scout Move, tho, because they wouldn't normally be able to Move after Disembarking from a Vehicle that Moved.

It's covered in more detail in the Main Rulebook FAQ.

Pretty much always better just to get out on Turn 1, before the Valk Moves, as far as I can tell.

Well you can actually disembark from a Valkyrie that moves flat out.. (p.56 C:IG)

And I know we are cutting things fine here, and that it dosn't have any gamebreaking qualities.. But still..

Yeah, you could still do a Grave Chute Insertion with Penal Legion, Recon Storm Troopers, or whoever Creed feels like giving Scout to.
