OK so as some of you may know I have around 200 plastic Catachans. What I'm wondering is should I keep them and paint them to fit my army, should I keep just a platoon as an add-on force, or should I get rid of them in favor of more Cadians?
Answers on a post card please. (although I will make this a vote when I'm not on my phone)

Well there is plenty of warzones that see more than 1 guard regiment fighting, so it shouldn't be too strange too see both Cadians and Catachans..
IG used to be one squad of "each" as fare as i remember..

Personally, I am massively in favour of varied guard regiments - yet I die a little inside each time I see a modern plastic Catachan mini.

200 Catachans? Probably even more Cadians. Sounds handy for a massive Apocalypse game where you want to tell where one table spanning wave of men ends and another begins.

I think it's 225 to be exact and the same for the Cadians. Just not sure as like most people I think they are just too bulky

Ok so I've decided that I'm going to keep a platoon (thats 55 men) and get rid of the rest. If anyone is interested let me know, when I've done an exact count I will be posting in the Trading Post.

55 men are only about half a full platoon, butI say keep them.

Sorry I'm basing this on a wiki I read about British military, I'll find it out if anyone would like to have a read. Well, the British military has very little to do with the Imperial Guard. Actually existing for one, the lack of Commissars is another. A full Imperial Guard Platoon is (IIRC) 138 men, including Commissars.

Infantry Squads The most basic unit used by the Imperial Guard is the Infantry Squad, and most Guardsmen in service are members of such squads. Notionally formed of 10 soldiers (9 Guardsmen and a Sergeant), infantry squads are usually equipped with basic infantry equipment (Flak armour and a Lasgun), and one or more may be equipped with heavier weapons or specialist equipment1. Many regiments further divide each infantry squad into two 5-man fire teams, which allows the squad to divide if necessary and affords it greater flexibility in combat[Needs Citation]. An Assistant Squad Leader (usually a Corporal or other non-commissioned officer) is usually detailed to take command if the leader is killed or incapacitated, or leads the second fire-team if the squad splits into two9a. Between 2 and 5 infantry squads make up a platoon, which is led by a junior officer, such as a Lieutenant.1 There are many variations of the standard infantry squad, normally depending on the type of regiment concerned: Armoured Fist Squads: an Infantry Squad mounted in a Chimera or some other transport vehicle; they are armed in a similar way to Infantry Squads, the only difference being that they have use of a dedicated transport vehicle.1 Drop Troop Squads: Drop Troops are specially trained Guardsmen, who utilize varying specialist equipment (Grav-chutes, grav-gliders, etc.) to deploy from the air into a war zone. The training involved in learning to use this equipment is typically very demanding, and regiments of Drop Troops have a reputation of being extremely capable fighters. Apart from their specialist equipment, they carry the weaponry and equipment standard to a normal infantry squad, with some minor modifications.1 An extract taken from wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Guardsman#.T2ciyXmacW4My army is based on a similar structure to the one on the right on this website en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon

Dunno why you quoted all that text, I just added up the numbers from the current codex. Of course there will be variations in the different regiments in the fluff (that kind of goes without saying) but game-wise an IG platoon is between 25 (PCS + 2 squads) and 138 (max squads, HWS, SWS, Conscripts and commissars) men.
As usual, due to the GW writers general lack of understanding on how real-life weapons and troops function what is true in reality has very little to do with what goes on in the 40K universe.
