Hi there.  Im a returning player.. I dug out my old models and couldn't help but form them back up!  

Ive been thinking about getting back into 40K and I am tempted by other newer/faster more dark and pointy models and armies.. but This isn't a cheep hobby so I figured I should start with what I got to be kind to my pocket.  

All my vehicles are fully painted as is about 1/3 of the infantry  Everything is base coated with at least 2 colours though so I'm actually well on my way to having a pretty sexy looking army with aprox 20quid spent on paints!  Which isn't bad going.. thanks childhood me!  You really tried to get a fully painted army together but you never quite managed it! 

I'm gonna have some fun in the near future putting some lists.. but thought that you lot may take some joy in helping me out.  and I would greatly appreciate the advice.

Got a mix of Steel Legion, plastic Cadian and plastic Catachan models with some misc tank crew and OP humanoid stuff in there.  The theme of the list was always a rag tag bunch of city fighters so the jumble looks quite good any model in a squad with any other looks quite good.  So the tank crew could plug gaps in the infantry platoon or whatever if needs be  

In terms of expansion The new Wyvren rules look pretty filthy and mortars suit the city fight theme.  Not a massive fan of the model though.  What do you think of using a Forgeworld Death Korps Of Krieg Thudd Gun as a stand in?  Would go with my theme towards having my models in Respirators.  Is it a much smaller model?  True line of sight being a thing now..

Those dark and pointy armies are gimmick lists for people who grow weary of playing Space Marines. You want a real army of real men: the Imperial Guard! Don't settle for less!

Your existing miniatures can make a small Infantry Platoon and a squad of mechanized Veterans... but it will bw best in smallish games unless you really pad your points. I will try to come up with a list that might work in your other post.

See how quickly the madness takes hold? At the start of this post you were talking about how expensive 40K is and how you want to do this army on a budget. By the bottom of the post you're talking about placing an order to Forge World. Snap out of it, man! You can buy a whole army of eBay bargain models for the cost of a few shiny Forge World kits. As long as your force is a rag-tag assortment of survivors from other formations, that makes bargain hunting easy. Right now you need regular old Guardsmen with an assortment of heavy and special weapons, and unglamorous Chimeras and Leman Russes. In the current rules, Vets in Chimeras are especially important for claiming objectives. Wyverns are great, but Leman Russes are cheap and very tough in the current rules and I would not skimp on them, especially since you can find Leman Russes used and cheap.

Money asside, in terms of game play how good is A DKOK Thudd Gun as a Wyvren Proxy?  there is a size issue...

I like the gas mask look, and back when there were not so many head swap options I decided to give my own plastic Cadians Pig Iron Kolony Militia heads.

I still think these are great heads and comparatively cheap (important if you need 60-80 heads).
Some of the newer heads by other companies (often in resin) are more detailed but also more expensive.

The DKoK Thudd Gun is definitely smaller than a Chimera chassis. That may be a problem since the smaller models will be easier to hide from enemy fire while they will still able to shoot freely. You might try mounting them on a base that has the same footprint as a Wyvern, to fend off any charges that you are "modeling for advantage".
