Hey guys, I'm facing a stompa in a 2000 pt. game. Part of the Red Waaaaaaagh campaing, game 3 "
I've never faced anything like this and would like some help defeating it. No special characters though.
What list would you guys build?
I was thinking of having a 5 man deep strike Scions unit with 2 melta guns, a 10 man Vetrans squad with 2 melta guns in a Valkyrie(dropping off right behind the stompa when I come on from reserves), a Vendetta, and a LR battle tank, and either a Devil Dog(With Meltas) to start in reserve and dash twords it or a Basilisk.
I have to remember, he will still have almost 1200 pts. of Orks after this stompa.
He's a really good player(store owner) and will have 4 Trucks, a bunch of boys, etc....
What list would you guys come up with and tactics on how to beat this guy, while not loosing the rest of my lines to do so.
Thanks!!

If I were your opponent I would make it difficult to allow you to deep strike/unload melta totting units within range of the walker by bubble wrapping it with cheap ork mobs. As you said he will still have plenty of other points on the board so why not kill two birds with one stone?? I'd recommend fielding Basilisks or Manticores-though the Manticore can't pen atleast its got potential to strip multiple hull points! What both of these patforms offer is a large pie plate. If you load up on Lascannons and miss, you kill nothing. If you load up on these pie plate lobbas and miss then atleast you'll take some orks with you! The stompa is a large model so it should be quite difficult to miss anyway. A HWS of Lascannons is two melta guns cheaper than a Basilisk... so not much. Although you get more shots, providing you don't have a senior officer dishing out orders then these squishy T3 models would only have 1.5 hits per turn. Although that is better than one Bassie you don't kill anything when the Lascannon misses-with an Earthshaker cannon you do. Loading up on Autocannons will help pop open a few of those trucks however if your short on heavy Weapons then plasmas will do the job... plus both of those weapons are reasonable at killing orks. Blobbing up your guys is a good idea however I'd avoid 40-50 man blobs because if orks manage to make it into combat then they will EAT that squad. Multiple sacrificial 20xman 'speed bumps' with flamers to race forward and tie up the trucks, hopefully getting them to dismount with a couple of 20-30xman Autocannon totting blobs in depth. Commissars are your friend Both the devil dog or a hell hound variant will be high on his hit list so make sure to have a redundancy. Leman Russ is an oldy but a goody but the exterminator, punisher (punisher does require you to be closer though) and eradicator would all be pretty handy to have around. I'm a fan of the eradicator. Perhaps 2xVendettas instead of 1xVendetta and 1xValk may be better? It just depends on what his air power is like or if you were willing to load up on multiple rocket pods on a valk in order to scour his deployment zone (the majority of his army should be moving forward) so you can then drop off a 6xman special weapon squad so as to claim an objective or be a line breaker... (someone please confirm Vendettas can also carry 6xpassengers, I am quite tired and forgetful right now ) A sws would be cheaper than vets and better than dropping down a pcs or ccs whose orders will be desperately needed up the field. Anyway that is enough of my amateur-istic, sleep deprived advice Good luck!

The vendettas will work wonders. I recommend as many lascannons, missile launchers and autocannons as you've got. Spread them out msu style and get plenty of cover because Stompas shoot a lot, at different targets, with really heavy weapons. They can also get mek upgrades to repair hull points and destroyed weapons and the all important force field.
You can't ignore the trukks either so be sure to have enough heavy weapons to do the job.

Stompa's are big and powerful, they have 2 main weapons, the first fires a huge 10" blast, the second fires a LOT S6 / S7 of shots, if your opponent is wise he will also take the Deff Arsenal upgrade which enables him to fire a few S8 missiles a turn. The secondary weapons list is also huge but tends to be less of a concern in comparison.
It may be worth having you leman russ act as bait for the big blast cannon, the big blast is the highest strength shot the stompa fires so it's his best Anti Tank option against AV14, the other weapons won't really hurt it. Try to draw fire on to the russ so 10" of death doesn't touch the rest of your army.
As stated, the stompa will be likely to self repair in a number of ways, so make sure you kill it in one turn - if that means waiting for reserves then so be it... use the first turn to shoot everything else and completely ignore the stompa (this will likely scare the heck out of your opponent) and then in turn 2 when all your reserves arrive: Kill the abomination!
I doubt the player will leave the space for you to easily drop anything into melta range, you will probably have to make the hole.
Fielding multiple high strength large blast will help you, master of ordnance, basilisk, manticore, leman russ, are good as you will be hitting the stompa plus other targets.
Lascannons are also very effective, sentinels with lascannon are cheap and can enter from reserve then take a shot before it can target them.
Stompas can go KABOOM in pretty huge ways, this can make a player nervous when they see that their super heavy is running low on HP's - they may move surrounding units away to escape the blast and then make a suicide move to catch as much of your stuff when it goes bang. Beware.
The orks are likely to be heading toward you; outflanking stuff will be handy for creating a net in which they are surrounded, taking rear armour shots and sweeping small defensive units from backfield objectives. Just beware of outflanking into their charge distance.
Orks have very little effective AA, so anything that flies will rain on his parade all game long. Make sure that rain is painful and reduces mobility.

Is it coming from Codex Orks, or some other source?
