Hey people, I'm Liam. I'm returning to the hobby after nearly a decade & I quite fancy the Elysian Drop Troops. Back in my day there were Elysian Drop Troops but no planes so I just felt attracted to them. What I want to ask though how viable are Forge World Armies? Do I need my opponents permission to use them & do tournaments often disallow them? It's just an awful lot of money to spend on an army I don't get to use as much as I like.
I've also considered a Storm Trooper (or what ever the hell they're called these days) army or throwing some third party pith helmet heads on the plastic Cadians & painting them red for a Praetorian army. Elysians are my first choice though.

hey buddy! I had the same question, i started off laying marines and guard and traded everything i had to build my current army Death Korps of Krieg. I always wondered whether or not ide be able to use them, but in the end i learned , everyone loves playing against them because they look awesome on the table, to this day i still offer to play them as normal guard. does it suck when they ask me to. yeah sometimes, but i usually let them know that my normal guard army list are particularly stupid and sometimes overpowered, do i do this on purpose... maybe... haha ( only 1000 point game? 2 basalisk and 2 manticore with chimera vets and a vadetta should do it) hahah anyway thats not my point, I started playing Death Korps because i love the siege of vraks and all the fluff behind them .
Im not going to let anyone dictate what i want to buy or use.But recently ive heard most tourneys allow Forge world armies with the rising interest in them. some of the more rediculous models and rules are rejected, most guard stuff is good to go though! My friends love my army, the guys at the store love my army etc. For eslyian drop troops i think it would be easy to switch between The Forge world rules and normal IG rules. Using the squads as vets in valkyries, and the little buggies as sentinals or salamanders
When it come to praetorians they are really cool! i think that army looks great! Check out the battle report on youtube called Starship zulu or something near that, it has praetorians , its great! Also check out victoria miniatures for praetorian models or just heads! great quality miniatures. In the end its up to you, its your money, and you should buy the army your going to love and have the most fun with, because thats why we play right to have fun! take a look at their fluff and tactics , the two armies you have chosen have very different styles of fighting. so let me know what you decide or think im happy to help out! Thanks for the advice. I've been looking at a few army project blogs & I've gotta say resin models seem like a lot of hassle. So what I've decided I'm gonna do is get myself 500 points of Praetorians to get re-used to handling miniatures then get 500 points of Elysians, then knock my Preatorians Upton 1000 points & alternate between them both in 500 point blocks each. Maybe I'll throw Storm Troops in the pattern too maybe not, I haven't decided yet. It would be cool to have a none Space Marine elite imperial army, if it's anything like when I used to play then about 80% of the games I'm going to be playing will be against Space Marines or some variant of, I'd swear there's more Space Marines than there are Orks out there.
But yeah I know what you mean, I've got my heart set on fielding hundreds of planes all in one go & paint some cool WWII styled nose art. I don't know if that's overpowered or too weak or what ever (as I said I've been out of the hobby a very long time) but it's what I want to do. Maybe even in the long run get two or three of those Marauder super heavy planes.
Funny you should mention Victoria Miniatures, they appeared in my FB news feed just to day. I think I'll stick with the Cadian bodies for the guardsmen but I'll defiantly be using Victoria Miniatures artillery pieces, those models are well cool.
I'll check that Youtube vid now, I got a bit of time to kill.

People wont see it as cheesy, you should be fine, if its a flier heavy army fluff wise thats the way its supposed to be played, youll be fine, its when that combined with all melta vets and manticores and other stupid stuff that makes players mad, the leaf blower i think it was called. Not to maky people complain about it anymore though or guard at all really . But yeah run your flier army i think thatll look great!, like i said i play a dkok so i have 3 companies of artillery ready to fight haha, its dumb and over powered but its fluff, i dont run them all in every game anyway haha. How did you like the battle report?? its been my favorite one for a while now haha, the music is annoying though, also keep me updated on that army of yours sounds cool! FMJ
