looks great! It's always good to paint a couple of grunts first and reward yourself with painting a squad leader with a bit more bling afterwards

Thanks, nutty! Yeah, I'm seeing the wisdom in that now... Half squad painted. I did them as an assembly line, so they're a touch messier than I'd want, but you can't really tell from the pictures since my camera only does "Washed out" or "Out of focus". They are SUPER quick to paint, though. I'm quite pleased with the crest on the quintanus. It's hard to see here and it was sort of an accident, but I quite like it now. They're actually closer to "Crimson Fist" than "Ultramarine" in terms of color, but I don't mind, since I like the contrast of the deeper colors. I'm going to try something a little different with the second half of the squad later.

Loving your Ultramarines! I look forward to seeing them painted. I own the Forgeworld Guilliman model, it is sublime. Is it true he's coming to 40k!? That would be amazing! That's the rumor, but they also said Plastic Sisters in January, and that's probably not happening, so, you know, grain of salt. Thanks for the compliment, though. Your Ultras were sort of the inspiration for the project. I thought the original rumour was P-Sisters for March, and then people got excited about the Canoness and the leaked photos and thought it would happen sooner. Ultramarines look decent with the paint job. I also think the same helmet thing works nicely for the sgts. It reminds me a bit of Cheminhaler's army of guard who all used the same head to get a distinct look.

They are bit dark, but there are different shades of ultramarines even in official sources... so who cares as long as they look good, right? Being quick to paint is always a good thing too.

Did a Sgt. the other day, and he was NOT quick to paint. Probably took me as long as all the other guys put together. If things go well, I'll be finished with the squad by the end of the week. I think I'm going to prime the other half of the collection white, though, to see if that affects the shade of blue (and to cheat a little with painting those loincloth things on the command squad).
Centurions and more Sanguinary Guard came yesterday. I found out if you don't put on the big crotch plate/leg guard piece on the Centurions, they look a little less silly. From last Wednesday to yesterday, I've built (or rebuilt) almost 60 marines, painted six, and started on a seventh.
Also, thanks to the relentlessly awesome Trooper 1974, I now have a rather large Forgeworld model to assemble. Watch for that soon.

Soon. I'm not going to tackle it until I have the time to assemble it properly, especially since it's a super-heavy. Besides, it's not like it's a Titan or anything.

Oooh.. nice. Had the option to buy a second hand one of those a while back.. but even at 40% it's pretty pricey.

I'm going to use my psychic powers and say it's a herring. FW still make resin herrings, right?
Loving the Ultramarines, Reds. Darker armour is fine, you can say they're fighting on a night world after midnight. I wouldn't use a white undercoat in future, though, personally I think it'll open up too many problems and you'll have to do more coats to darken it up. The leg studs might look better blinged up in gold.

The leg studs might look better blinged up in gold. I may have ordered a can of white primer yesterday, about fifteen minutes before I saw your post... I'll try the leg studs in the future. I don't actually LIKE studs, per say, so I'm not sure how I feel about making them pop with gold, but it would be worth an experiment. Anyway, first full squad done. I'm nearly out of blue paint, so I ordered a few different shades with the white primer (plus Celestine and a bit more blood-angely stuff). I'm not overly thrilled with some of them, especially the lascannon marine, but I AM happy with the Sgt. and the quintanus, and they're sort of the stars of the squad, so that's alright. As for the Forgeworld kit, it's a Marauder Destroyer. It's also quite daunting. There's no instructions (just a list of pieces), and it's a BIG kit that will require lots of attention to detail and hard work. Which I am not good at. I'm considering commissioning it, but I'm terrified of trying to ship it anywhere (or back). If anyone Stateside is interested in taking a crack at it, hit me up. Otherwise, I'll have to work up the nerve to work on it.

Maybe we should just fly out 3ff3ct or Cosmic as lend-lease for you.

I would also suggest avoiding a white primer. The only time I've had good luck with a white base coat is when the plan was to use washes over it. Otherwise, I'd stay away.

That's two votes against white primer, then. Maybe I'll have to start a White Scars army to use the can up.

I only use white primer. It's much easier to get various effects and textures with it than black. I tried colored primers once, but it didn't work like a primer.

White primer arrived, and it's a nice day. Temptation... building...
I built both Celestine and Greyfax. Greyfax is a great model ruined by really stupid shoes. Those heals make her a full head taller than most space marines, and it looks like she's walking around on stilts (or a different scale). The good news is I was able to remove her hat candle without destroying anything. Well, aside from the candle.
Celestine and her Saeraphim... Hoo boy. First, they're fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. I'm as stunned by them as I was by the plastic DE warrior and wych models when GW pushed those out. They are simply fantastic, and GW has NO excuse not to do plastic sisters. They've got them down. There are two caveats, though.
1) I don't know why they decided to mold the models' bangs to the armor instead of the head. I can only assume it was a necessity, because otherwise it was a colossally stupid way to do it, and making the bangs a connector piece to the sprue compounds the stupidity, given that the hair is a fairly fragile. They're extremely fiddly, especially for someone like me with giant stupid fingers. As a result, some glue got smeared on one of the Seraphim's face, and I wasn't able to clean it all off. The detail is so fine that it wrecked her mouth. Maybe priming and painting will fix it, but I'm pretty angry.
2) "Let's use these scrolls of parchment to prop up the model!". No. I know it looks awesome and they're surprisingly sturdy once everything is FIRMLY glued, but it wouldn't take much to break the parchment. Please, GW, don't make a habit of this. Celestine is so wobbly that having her on the desk while I type is shaking her.
But DO NOT LET THAT DISSUADE YOU. These are amazing models, made all the more impressive because they're relatively small (compared to that Sigmar model of the woman riding the doom beetle). If GW puts out sisters with this kind of detail, I will throw ALL of my money at them.
In other news, 15 Death Company, 20 BA tactical marines, a DC dread, a DC chaplain, and BA libarian with jump pack and a Sanguinary Priest all built. This fleshes out my BA force to a very respectable and flexible toolbox, so I'm pretty happy.

Thanks for the heads up RedsandRoyals! My bruv fields sisters and is going halves with me on the Triumverate box (I'm getting the Mechanicum model!) I'll advise him to be careful.

Depends on what you want to do. Lots of grooves and studs and such to make sure pieces fit together in a specific way. The head has to match the bangs (grr) so head swaps are out unless you chop the bangs off the armor, at which point the head may not be salvageable for a different mini. Replacing her wings with a metal seraphim jump pack should be doable, but the plastic ones are wider and would probably run into her robes. The doves can be used elsewhere with a touch of trimming, and you could possibly give her a different blade if you cut below the guard. Leg an arm poses will be very awkward if you don't go with their defaults.
@jud: I think we'll need to see that Magos when you finish him.

For models that will be primarily metallic in color, always use black primer. Otherwise it really depends on what kind of effect you are trying to achieve when making the choice between black and white. In some instances with large models, I've been known to use different primers on different sub-assemblies, such as how I painted my Knight Titans (their skeletons were primed black so I could then spray with boltgun metal, and I then used white or black primer on their armor, depending on what final colors the plates were going to be).

The first squad look brilliant. Great start to your force.
Is the Inquisitor's crossbow any good ruleswise?
