Got my national security vetting cleared today so I start the new job at the start of October (they sent me an email 85 days ago saying I got the job but had to be cleared first). What new job is this, or is that classified too? Congratulations, anyway.

So, UK members, what are your thoughts about the upcoming referendum on Scotland?

Briefly visited Scotland last month and barely noticed there was an election on, even in Edinburgh which had people pouring in about to host the Fringe. It'll be interesting to watch, though.

They're fornicateing idiots if they want independence! They have like 40% unemployment and literally everything is paid for by the government, nhs, perscriptions (english have to pay for), eye tests (we pay), university (we pay A LOT), aswell as other things... so their a million times better off for staying.
The only thing is all the young scots have watched brave heart too many times and hate the English. I honestly can't think of a good reason for them to leave. If they do however, we will be much better off.

Isn't one of the Yes campaigns reasons that the House of Commons is more concerned with England and kind of ignores Wales and Scotland and that independence would give them more control over Scotland.
Though saying that, Salmond has been somewhat vague regarding the currency and EU factors and has always struck me as being a little sly. And being Irish I'm not that keen on another small country with similar exports and IT capabilities joining the marketplace.

Being British, I'm not keen on having one powerful country being split into several irrelevant ones.

That as well. Britain wouldn't be as powerful if it was just the individual countries rather then the union. I'm glad Ireland left it but I'd like the UK to stay together, they're not the good guys in world politics but they're the closest to it.

In fairness, Ireland leaving kind of bankrupted Ireland until the EU came along. It would do the same to Scotland: Spain will veto Scottish accession to the EU, which in turn would ruin it.

All those plans were decent if you remove the kid gloves. They're all still doomed to failure, naturally.

Thats why they have the welsh and scottish assemblies, they have 'enough' power. Salmond is just a girl thingy who hates the English and wants his cake... what he doesnt realise is the cake looks nice but its marmite and lemon curd flavoured.

I just found out that my dad has had a heart attack. He's mostly fine, and I hope to take this chance to improve his diet. He's now even further restricted in what he can do for the time being, however.

Sorry to hear about this, Req. Hope he gets better fast.
My dad was chatting over coffee to a famous Iraqi surgeon today, about health, funnily enough, and the surgeon specifically said heart attacks are 'nothing nowadays', given the improvements in medicine recently, provided the person in question gets to the hospital on time.
Regarding independence / secession in general, I've always found it bizarre that only the region in question gets to vote. Telling Scots that they'll be worse off without England is pointless and demeaning. I remember hearing the reverse argument in the South ages ago (from leading politicians no less - even the PM maybe?). I heard an even more daft one years ago; London should become its own 'city state' and break away from the rest of the country. So... yeah, let's just ignore the history that happened and go Florence 15th century....

You're right about it bankrupting us but Ireland is never going to be a very wealthy country, we don't have the population or the natural resources. Regardless of what certain parties spout from the pulpit we're small fish in a big pond, we need big friends and despite our history I think Britain is on Ireland's side in most things. I don't think a relationship with an independent Scotland would be as useful. Sorry to hear about your dad Req, I hope he gets better.

Thanks, all. He should be fine, albeit, he will have to be more careful. As I've been telling him. I may create a meal plan. Just the thought of it makes me laugh at that futile idea, but hey.
It just inspires me to increase my own level of health. That'll be me in 30 more years (minus the AS, hopefully).
