Just watched The Manchurian Candidate (1962) again for the first time in years. It definitely has a place in the top 25 movies made in the 20th century, if not of all time.

So you don't like the new version, starring Denzel Washington, then?

So you don't like the new version, starring Denzel Washington, then? My computer is busted completely not turning on . Posting from a phone now Denzel Washington's a fine actor, but The Manchurian Candidate was made for a specific time (1950s-1960s), and works less well the further you get from that (especially when you consider the difficulty of linking the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a fictitious Communist plot to take over the United States). Besides, a lot of the modern conveniences like cell phones and caller ID detract from the suspense of the movie. It's my experience that re-makes rarely measure up to the originals, and more often than not tend to be disappointing.

I for example perfer the remake of gone in 60 seconds. I would come up with other examples but ive been working through the night and cant think straight

Also Scarface the 1980s version is better than the old-school black and white one. It can work both ways ; didn't the Cuban missile crisis happen in between those 2 movies?

I liked the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still as much, or more than the original.

Today...
I finally completed the Razorwing Jetfighter's I have had for the past few years.
They are an excellent kit in design, using clever techniques for assembly and an aesthetic which I enjoy a lot.
I also managed to put the last squad of Corsairs together. I Have the 2 HQ's to complete now (and all the bits for them too) so I'm very close to completion of the assembly stage.
This is all because I was ill and had the day off sick, which justified my lack of work on my studies and free'd me to spend time stick grey plastic together.
go Flu!

A disfiguring age, is it? I don't recall anything twisting my body into an unsightly form at that age.
Happy b-day, though. Try not to die young.

That's an impressive model given the amount of time since the film's release.
The more I think about that film the less I like it.
Shouldn't have bothered with actors and just driven the tanks around for 2 hours.

Today, apparently, Marion Barry shuffled off to the Big Crack Pipe In The Sky. I wonder if the D.C. government will go after his Estate for all of the unpaid parking and traffic tickets he had? Also, someone awesome gave me a bunch of awesome stuff, including a scale model kit of the APC used in Aliens, and I went on a first date with a hawt GMILF.

Happy b-day Adken! Hookers, ice cream...you know the drill.
Also, I saw FURY recently. I direct these questions to the historians in the Underhive. Is that REALLY what tank commanders did? Did they really have their heads outside of the tank like that? I ask because my grandfather was a tank commander and I've already considered him an admirable man and to add the kind of stones it would take to have your head out like that is just...wow.

Depends on the tank they were using, but more often than not, yeah. Visibility was terrible in tanks back then, so the only real way for a tank commander to gain situational awareness was to pop his head out and have a look. Read through a couple accounts of the fighting in the ETO, you'll almost certainly find at least one reference to a tank commander being shot in the head, or being decapitated by shell fire. The practice was still in use more recently than one might think, too. I know of at least on instance in the Gulf War where a Marine tank commander had to stick his head out of a hatch to get a better handle on the situation (He was unscathed, thankfully).

Yep. And that whole thing about a crew member having to get OUTSIDE of the turret to operate the pintle machine gun is also legit. I recall a model of a Sherman that I built as a wee lad that had a mini to put together of a crew member crouched down behind the turret to man the machine gun and remember thinking (the equivalent of), "That's messed up!"
