Undecided on this one... are plasma pistols worth taking along? Are they better with Sergeants, Vets, Command Squads, Stormies - can't decide... how do you guys use them?

the only time I've found that plasma works in a guard army is in command squads with a medic. otherwise you're just giving away models (and typically the extra attack that a sgt w/ pistol and ccw lends can be a desirable thing).
I can see how the question is debatable, but it's 16pts for a single plasma shot which has about a 1 in 6 chance of killing your melee model right before melee occurs...
it's alot of points - I chose not to go with 'em. I literally modelled a sgt. w/ plasma pistol and he ended up collecting dust on a shelf permanently. that's my real life experience with it.

I always use them. They are one of the sure ways you are going to kill marines and Necrons. Yeah, you could end up killing yourself with an iffy shot but in my humble opinion it's worth the risk.
I use them with my Vet. sergeants in my Storm troopers squads. Give 'em a power weapon too and you are away. They can really make a mess of pretty much anything with power armour. You could even give a terminator squad a bit of a headache, provided you have other plasma guns in the squad.
I've taken several sentinels out using my Black Templar Marshall's plasma pistol.

I never use them, purely because of the Get Hot! rule. Call me paranoid, but the dice are still out to get me... I can pinpoint it to a childhood horror:
Picture the scene. A kill-team game. Through devious dealings, rule bendings and immutable law-violation, five Chaos Marines with three plasma guns and two plasma pistols faced down a horde of Tau. My delight was difficult to conceal: instant kills, no armour saves... it looked too good to be true.
It was.
Rounding the first corner, I came across the first brute squad. Grinning with ill-concealed glee, I picked up the dice and prepared to furnish the terrain with an attractive Tau Soup. But woe! The dice gods are as inconstant as the moon, who monthly changes in her silver orb...
Five dice were rolled. Five times in sucession, those acursed cubes came to rest, facing such as to betray the single dot of a 'one' result: the Gamer's Bane. It looked like those plasma guns had just 'Got Hot!'.
Tau Soup was off the menu. Shas'ui Monke turned round to see what the noise was, to see five Chaos Marines. Sliced, diced and sauted.
Suffice it to say, I should have fired off 7,776 volleys before such a result made itself known: and to this day I never have fired a plasma gun since.
So bolt pistols all the way for me...

Brilliant story - must have been the shortest Kill Team game in history, at least you achieved a 100% kill rate...

haha that's amazing....ly sad.
there's a definate argument for and against plasma pistols. I recommend trying them out for yourself. play a few games where ALL your sergeants 'count as' vet sgts. with plasma pistols.
you may also find that you dont need the vox network offered by the command hq since all your squads are up to LD8. give them close order so they go to LD9 in melee (if I remember right, close order adds a pt. of Ld.... I may not remember right though..)
close order and die hards would be pretty nice - you'd have your leadership and morale rules housed in your squads so the officers were less important to the guard infantry (though still with a role for sure.. supporting squads where the sgt. burnt himself off, conscripts, special weapon deliveries - talk about plasma.... - babysitting heavy weapon squads.. there's alot for a command squad to do even without directly supporting the LD of the main line).

I use plasma in my vet squads I know its a big risk but its a risk I must take to knock out the heavy stuff (dread nughts termies you know stuff like that) after all 3 plasma shots at a rang of 24in thats beauty in its self exspesilay when they melt a marines head into goop and your man runs away with out getin burnt.

I've just kitted out my Officers and commissars with PP's. With carapace armour they only have a 1 in 12 chance of getting burned and even then they only lose one wound.

i always take them in my drop troops, but thats because of a lack of heavy weapons, (only ones i have in 1500pts is my 3 sents). you'd actually be amazed at how much they live. i only give them to officers as i dont use vet sargs. but they are really good with cara as said above.

on a drop troop command squad, (which is rediculously awesome for mass suicide plasma death volley action) I can also see plasma pistols being a great choice for the JO. it's not like that squad has a life expectancy anyway!!
I question whether carapace armor is even worth the points on the pistol toting officer in a squad like that though... I can't see them surviving your opponent's next turn unless they drop into a 'final nail in your coffin' type situation where there's nothing left to deal with them after they level their target.

thats the point thou, against SMurfs, they wont assault unles you have carapace. bolters rapid fireing will hurt far more. its to give my men a 2nd turn of fire instead of getting smeared by boltguns.

plasma guns are one of lifes essentials, forget water oxygen nutrition if youve got a plasma gun your garanteed to live...... a very short life
seriosly though against meq's they are indispensable since all my friends collect csm's my command squad consists of four guardsmen with plasma guns plus a hso and two advisor's with plasma pistols, theres nothing they cant kill
the only time the dark gods minions have ever gotten the better of then was a nasty incident involving a bloodthister and lots of dead guardsmen

Pretty much only ever use them on multi wound characters, so HSO, commisaars and any one that happens to have an HE. Would prob work well on preists too I guess, but I don't really use them.

Part of the key in using the plasma is to have the medic available. If you do fail a get's hot you don't take a wound since the medic will save that wound for you.
However, we'll have to see what they new medics are able to do once our new codex comes out. We might loose that ability. Hope we don't, but wouldn't put it past them.

I use them With Drop if I can spare the Points. There ok in Line squads as well.
But work best with vets and Storm troopers and Command squads if there Deep strikeing

16pts for a single "power die" to roll once in a game. if you're gonna do it, make sure you don't need the leadership confered by the sergeant too ^_^

Just remember pistols in 5th are one shot only at 12 no chance for double tap Which is good for PP's as now you have to roll the max number of shots a weapon can fire. Just thought - Plasma cannons are blast weapons so therefore use the new blast weapon rules ;D ;D ;D Oh I love my Demolisher. Sweet Plasma death.
