Hi everyone, I am new to this Forum although I do post on other Forums such as 40K Online, Warseer etc, and thought I would share some pics of my current ongoing IG army. I already have an almost complete 2000pt Cadian Army, but when the new IG Codex came out a year or so ago I couldn't resist starting another army, which in hindsight now seems bit crazy! As my Cadian Army is pretty much "straight out of the box" I thought I would try something a little bit different this time around so I started a Macragge PDF army. This army follows the Codex Astartes very closely, as all good citizens of Ultramar should! Please bear in mind that this a Macragge PDF army, which is a bit different to a bona fide Guard army, so the unit markings etc relate to the rules laid down by Roboute Guilliman. These Macragge PDF are attached to the Second Company Ultramarines of Cato Sicarius. So here are some work in progress shots. I started this army back in November, so have been painting for about 5 months, but as yet nothing is totally finished. However once I have my HQ finished I will go back and finish off the rest of my troops before moving onto the tanks etc. Also apologies for some of the photos, I have been having problems with the camera lately. HQ: Colonel Iron hand Straken.Astartes Fleet Liaison Officer Lt. Varras (counts as Officer of the Fleet).Chaplain Caustas Dan Glokta (counts as Priest).Melta Gun Veteran.Command Squad together (work in progress).Hope it's OK to post so many pics all in one go? I have pics of my troops too, which I will post up next, but will wait a bit in case I overload the thread with too many pics all at once! Cheers for looking, C and C always appreciated.

Looking really good. Usually I can't stand the Ultramarines, but I'm really liking your PDF. Nice use of extra FW parts.

I like the idea and the painting, but it bugs that me that people seem to think that any loser with a shotgun and powerfist that looks remotely veteran can counts as having a 3+ armour save, invisible power plant for the fist to make it faster, plus T4.

A bit harsh? Maybe some people dig the rules but for some crazy reason don't like the model? I'm all for conversions, although I don't think any I have seen have been better than the Straken model itself. It's lovely I do love the idea for this, and the painting is great. REALLY great. Should turn out to be a very unique and beautiful army!

I love the clean, bold painting style as well as the chainsword on the priest/chaplain - great idea for a force and very well executed.

I'm not sure why a Macragge PDF would need a Straken stand in, but I love the model you made for him.
Only gripe would be the way he holds the shotgun, but there isn't a whole lot you can do with what you have to work with.
@happyorange Looks like a necromunda shotgun to me.

Absolutely loving the commander you've made... but I do find myself agreeing with Makarova to a point. I wouldn't use him as Straken - just create your own commander from the options in the list. Also, although I really love shotguns (no, not for the game winning power of them ) - and have one for my Inquisitor (as a bolter crossbow combi weapon) - I think this model would benefit far more from having a pistol of some discription. Don't get me wrong, I love what you've made, and with the shotgun painted and reattached, it'll probably look awesome - it's just a suggestion... As for the rest of your painting... I'm speechless. It really is that good. I can't find words to explain how impressed I am, other than to say "I want to see more!".

Hi everybody, Cheers for all the feedback, I'm glad you like them as I am really enjoying painting and building them. I do also agree with the comments about Iron Hand Straken, and to be honest I thought long and hard about the best way to do him. My initial thoughts were to have the army led by either an Astartes or an Astartes Scout, who's injuries were so severe he was tasked with training troops at the Agisellus Barracks, but not so severe that he needed to be entombed in a Dreadnought. I may revisit this idea, but the general concensus amongst my gaming group was that puttng a Marine or equivalent into the army might confuse some opponenets, who might mistake him for an Inquisitor, or even a Marine. So I decided to make something that was in essence similar to the GW Catachan Straken model. He has extensive bionics down one side of his body, but these are only visible due to the fact that he isn't wearing a great deal (being from a hot jungle climate). Having all the bionics exposed to such an extent wasn't really practical for my version as the Macragge PDF are sometimes called to the harsh polar regions of Macragge, hence the gloves and rebreathers. I reasoned that having the bionic arm exposed would be sufficient to give the impression of extensive bionics, the rest are hidden beneath his uniform. I used the scarred up face to represent that he had at some point suffered some pretty terrible injuries. I also left the power sword on this arm as it is a nod to my Ultramarines Commander, who sports a Relic Blade, which essentially has the same stats as Straken's bionics (Str 6 Power Weapon). The shotgun is indeed from the Necromunda Sprue, which I have to say all Guard players should own because it is invaluable, the autoguns and shotguns are fantastic. The pose for the shotgun is a nod to Arnie in Terminator 2, as this is how he holds his in the opening sequence, and I thought this was a nice homage to Straken, as he is also half man, half machine (ok so the Terminator isn't actually half man, but you know what I mean ) But yes I do get that it is a little off. A lot of people have suggested that I should swap out the shotgun for Straken's Plasma Pistol, which currently is holstered, but that then presents me with the problem of what to do with his shotgun? And I also agree that giving a Guardsman a 3+ armour save with toughness 4 is a bit of a stretch, but then again he is one of the best things in the new Codex so I wasn't gonna pass him up. I might say that he has some sort of power field incorporated into his bionics, but then even a refractor field doesn't offer a 3+ Sv. Anyway, he'll do for now, and I can use him as a standard Commander too. Right so I have more pics to show, these also aren't new pics but I haven't posted them here yet. These were painted a couple of months ago, but are still not quite finished. Troops:Infantry Platoon Squad 1There's still obviously a fair bit to do on these guys. I need to paint their weapons, webbing, grenades etc but they give a pretty good impression of where I'm going. I also need to attach the heavy weapons team to their autocannon, but need to finish painting their fatigues before I can do this. Following the Codex Astartes the sergeant has a red helmet, and the troopers have a white Tactical Arrow on their left shoulderpad. They will also have the Ultra Symbol on their other shoulders. Infantry Platoon Squad 2And these are pretty much the same as above, a few of them need their fatigues finishing off, and I have to paint their weapons, webbing etc but they are also not far from completion. Probably a weekend's work to be honest. Both squads consist of a sergeant with las pistol and ccw, plasma gunner and autocannon team. I am regretting the plasma gunners now though as during playtesting they all pretty much killed themselves, so may swap them out for grenade launchers. I have assembled the platoon command squad but haven't got very far painting it yet so I won't post pics for now. As always, cheers for looking.

Looking great if you dig Astartes symbols, I think GW just re-released the insignium astartes book, which is full of Ultramarines symbols and schemes. Could be worth a peek if you didn't get it the first time round

Wow these are looking great! I'm not usually a fan of ultrasmurfs (like everyone else on here must be why we all get along so well), but these are seriously cool. Bloody good job.

Your painting is continuing to amaze me! I'm also loving the idea of doing them as a PDF on a marine planet, and therefore using the stylings of the Marine chapter to influence their uniform etc.
Genius.

Nice Idea! I love the look of them and your painting is great!
One question though, If you have some Vet squads will they be from a "first company"

i love them, but i do have one minor criticism, in that not all of them have rebreathers, in squad 2 for instance every man in the squad except the sergeant has a rebreather, i just find it a little silly IMHO.

Hi guys, Well it's been a while since I have posted in this thread. To be honest work has kept me away from my hobby for quite a while now, I haven't picked up a paint brush for a couple of months. However I do have some photos to upload. I have just ben very slack at keeping this plog up to date so have hadn't realised I hadn't put these on as well. Before I do that though I will just answer a couple of questions: @ Callus: I do have some vehicles started for them, unfortunately most of them aren't at the paint stage just yet although I will be putting up some pics of my Guilliman Pattern Hellhound today. @ The Gurdsman: Yes my Vets will indeed be from 1st Company. They will eseentially be the same as Straken's command squad. Each will have a chest Aquilla to denote their veteran staus, but this will be white instead of gold, and they will have white helmets to match. The Marine Codex has Ultramarine Veterans from 1st Company sporting a white stripe on their right shoulder guard, which I have also followed (being devoted to Codex!) on the PDF, but it has been mentioned that this might confuse my Vets for Conscripts. I think the solution to his will be to keep the white stripe, but paint a crux terminatus style cross in the centre in black, but I haven't tried that yet. @ MrBojab: Yes I know what you are saying about the lack of respirators on some of the models. My original intention was to have no figures without respirators, as they are meant to be fighting in the harsh, cold conditions of Macragge's polar and mountain regions. Plus it also made them look more like Space marines. Unfortunately this wasn't entirely practical as there simply aren't enough FW Respirator heads to stop it looking boring, but also because some of the characters and advisors just looked better without them. My current argument is that not all Marines wear their helmets, and so the Macragge PDF don't always wear their's, even though they aren't genetically engineered super humans..... Anyway, here are some pics as promised. I must confess these aren't recent pics, but as I haven't done any work on this army for a coupe of months I don't think that matters! Guilliman Pattern Hellhound (still very work in progress) Still a very long way to go, decals are only place holders, markings will eventually be freehanded, and then all edge highlighting needs finishing, as well as painting Inferno cannon. All the vehicles in this army will use a mix of Guard and Marine parts, to symbolise the fact that they have access to equipment that other Guard Regiments wouldn't. Guilliman pattern ManticoreFiring Position: Travel position: Obviously a long way to go, but I plan on strating painting this at the weekend, so hopefully have some pics next week. Guilliman Pattern ChimeraPlease ignore the wonky turret! I have since created a new turret ring, but when these photos were taken it wouldn't sit right but you get the idea! So as you can see I have a very long way to go. Have buitl 2 more Chimeras and started painting up a Vendetta since these pics were taken, but don't have photos yet. The army will actually be fully mechanised, but I wanted to get some troops under my belt before starting the tanks, as tanks are a lot quicker to paint. I still have to go back and finish all my infantry squads, as well as their PCS, which I will hopefully be doing over the next couple of weeks. I also have pics of my take on Penal Legionnaires to pst up, but don't want to bombard you all with too many pics at this stage. Cheers for looking, C and C always appreciated.

Cheers guys, glad you like 'em, I just need to get 'em finished! So I have a few more pics to show, this time of my "counts as" Penal Legionnaires. I didn't like the idea of using Penal Troops in this army as it doesn't feel right for Ultramar. It is meant to represent the epitome of human civilisation and is as close as you can get to a Utopia in 40K. This meant that not only would crime itself hopefully be low, but it would also be dealt with swiftly, so having hordes of psychopathic scumbags waiting in prisons to be sent to war didn't seem right. I thought about not including them, but having looked at their rules couldn't resist. However the stats and special rules lend themselves to the idea of elite special forces as well as penal troops, and so I decided to create some recon scouts, using the Penal Legionnaire rules. From a fluff perspective these elite forward scouts receive training alongside Marine aspirants at Agisellus, and spend several weeks alongside Marine Scouts at the end of their training. They are then used as covert ops specialists, or forward recon scouts which I think the rules for penal troops are great for. And so here are my "counts as" Penal Legionnaires. Macragge PDF Recon ScoutsAs with everything else so far these are still not finished, I need to go back and finish things like their weapons, webbing etc, but they are getting there. I didn't want to have to make up one squad for each special ability, so I have tried to incorporate all 3 into one squad. Therefore their lasguns are different to the rest of the army to represent gunslingers, they have big knives to represent rending, and a few of them are running to represent fleet. So far they have been pretty effective in the games I have played, so I am tempted to make up another squad, but unfortunately they are a bit painful on the wallet as they are made from 3 different kits. Cheers for looking.
