But...cant they do something BESIDES space marines for once? No, in the far future their is only the colour blue Also all good space marine chapters should have secrets, the fluff is suppost to be gothic and dark, Blood Ravens having a heretic for a chapter master is different but cool. Also it's basically the only reason I can find to start killing them without also having the inquisition breathing down my neck

Other chapters don't get demon hammers and slaughter loyal guardsmen (usually). Grey Knights do. AND GREY KNIGHTS ARE AWESOME.Yes, yes they are.

Spoiler, the inquisition wins. There have been a few chapters I can think of that have been purged or sent on suicidal crusades of repentance.

*Runs into the room with a burning torch*
Someone mentioned burnings - of witches and/or Heretics! I want to be involved! *finds a burnt Ymmot* er... ok *sets Ymmot on fire again*
*finds a burnt "annoying little ten year olds with unpainted models who moan when i take there termis down with my guardsmen" pile...*
who is responsible for this? Burning things is the responsibility of me and a select few others, and this is clearly none of our doing! *sets fire the smouldering remains of the "annoying little ten year olds with unpainted models who moan when i take there termis down with my guardsmen" pile... and Varnicus*

I don't like the Blood Ravens. They are heretics. They should give themselves up to the screening of the =][=, or go on a never-ending crusade, like th Black Templars.
My models aren't painted. I can't sit there and paint them all.
Grey Knights have the right to kill 'loyal' Guardsmen. They are basically the Inquisition. Except more badass.

I don't like the Blood Ravens. They are heretics. If the Blood Ravens are heretics, then so is the Imperial Guard.

How? The Guard as a whole didn't start killing off loyalists. Regiments of guard can be heretics, just like chapters of marines. Regiments = chapters. if you are going to say that, then that would mean, by your logic, all marine Chapters are heretics, as all of the IG are heretics. Generalization doesn't work when you are talking about several hundred billion soldiers.

Generalization doesn't work when you are talking about several hundred billion soldiers. 1: Yes they have killed off loyalists, frequently in fact. And I should note that if you had paid attention, it was not the entire chapter that did this anyway-- so you're using a double standard here. Entire companies deploying to a battlefield is rare, nevermind the entire chapter in one location. Which brings me to the next point: 2: Regiments are not equal to chapters. Maybe SM companies are equal to regiments, if you're generous. Having an entire chapter of Space Marines deploy to a single location is pretty much unheard of. 3: I'm taking your own logic to the logical extreme here. Edited for not playing nice with others -Reds

Orren... didn't you mention somewhere that you were an Inquisitor that had turned renegade and allied with Tau? Your sir are the Heretic *easily dodges Vanicus' poorly aimed fireball and gives Varnicus a good hard scourging* Melissia: unheard of? I don't think it's ever happend has it? (just agreeing with your point) The only time I can really think of Space Marines deploying in full company (or, very rarely, multiple companies) is in extreme campaigns - such as Armageddon (sort of represented by Apocalypse games I suppose). That's generally my problem with things like DoW (not that I've played it, so I won't criticise it too much) - computer games generally seem to allow you to regularly deploy a company (or more) worth of Marines... RT: when you say Inquisition versus Space Marines (and I take it there you mean an Inquisitor - or cabal of Inquisitors maybe - using Imperial resources such as Guard/other Marines/etc) would you include Inquisition versus Chaos Space Marines? There's kind of a taster of this in "Cadian Blood"... I'd like to see it done properly too though...

The Space Marine rulebook is filled with company level deployments, and not all of them are on the same level of Armageddon. (Black Reach, Hunt for Voldorius, Zeist Crusade, the twin defeats of M'Kar the Reborn, the Ultramairnes 3rd company purging the Lagan system) And that's before getting into all of the Black Library novels.

In a ten thousand year history filled with constant warfare, those instances are still pretty rare.

Yeah, why this thing about SMs rarely operating as Companies. Thats their standard force size, company strength.
A company of just over 100 space marines in a strike Cruiser or Battle Barge (Usually reserved for the company led by the Chapter Master) makes them tactically flexible enough to stand as a force in their own right. Entire Chapters rarely deploy as one and it is rarer for two or more companies to be engaged in the same place but the Company is the basic force size for the Marines in pretty much all of the fluff.

Isn't it usually a strike force made up predominately by one battle company but supported by additional units from the reserve companies and chapter armory? Keeping the entire company from being fully engaged at any one location should they the risk losing the entire thing in a single disaster.

The imperial Fists company in Storm of Iron

Read the Assault on Black Reach, Salamander or Courage and Honor. A company of just over 100 space marines in a strike Cruiser or Battle Barge (Usually reserved for the company led by the Chapter Master) makes them tactically flexible enough to stand as a force in their own right. No, a Battle Barge carry up to three companies of Marines. This is made quite clear in Battlefleet Gothic.

As for whole chapters being deployed: Battle of Macragge. Most notable one. Only one I can think of/find without digging. It has happened.

The whole chapter wasn't there, just the 1st, 2nd, and parts of the 5th and 10th companies.
The only instance in which an entire chapter fought that I can think of is when the Astral Knights destroyed the Necron World Engine
