I'll be interested to see what Makarova writes about it. It's looking to be a complete overhaul from the previous edition. Look at the rumors thread on BOLS for more info. I'll link when I get a chance.

Are the WHFB templates the same size as 40K? I'd suspect so, but there's always that chance. I ask because I was going to make some that were similar to the new fancy ones, but if I can just buy them...

They're the same size if the templates from The battle for Skull Pass are anything to go by.

Just got a rumour roundup from a friend of Makarova's:
Units now fight in 2 ranks. Yes, because it's possible to do that with a sword or axe.... If your unit is 10 models wide, you fight in three ranks. We're not sure if this is because the units behind them throw their weapons over their friend's heads, or if they climb on each other's shoulders and go to war as piggyback riders. Cannons now scatter, not guess. Outnumbering doesn't matter....only rank bonuses. *Sigh* Charge distances are randomised now. Madness? THIS IS. Charging gives you +1 combat resolution. 25% system is in place. ENJOY.

The percentages date back to 3rd edition (at least), but random charge distance is a bit pants really.
I don't like all this gimmicky 'gamer edition' or 'limited edition' crudd, neither those fancy bone dice that you need a degree in BS to work out what you rolled. Just gimme normal rulebooks and dice over that anyday.

I actually had some small hopes about this. 5th edition was an improvement of 4th (40K) in my opinion at least, and the thing that's truly screwed up in WHFB are the army books and the basic equipment. I even thought they might get it into their heads to change the rules for spears and poleaxes, as no one has used them since 5th ed or something, they're worthless. Guess we'll see about that. The other changes I know of are a blatant, unscrupulous attept at making more money. Rewarding giant units that are 10 guys wide? Oh yes.
And apparently having more ranks than your opponent makes you stubborn. Which makes giant units even better, and goes against everything I've worked for in terms of actually making it matter what kind of guys you're using, not how many they are.
Archers can fire in two ranks, that's about the only good addition. They don't exactly rank up tightly behind each other, and moving just a little to the left so that your friend can shoot between the ranks is a no-brainer, even the models are able to do it if you model them correctly. That's been implemented in my game for a while as well, just haven't written it down yet.
And as always, I win and they lose.

And as always, I win and they lose. While I don't doubt that, lets wait to see what it's like. Then we can tear them down while holding the book in our hands.

Cannons don't scatter they just bounce.
No more chargers strike first it's pure initiative order, and units with always strikes first re-roll misses if thier initiative is over that of thier oponenents.

Almost certainly will be getting 8th edition, mostly because my fantasy O&G are a much larger force currently than my IG, and its played a fair bit at the local club. However not pre-ordering it, won't exactly be hard to get hold of once released so not bothering.
Considering getting it to get an A4 format book to match the army books, and getting the lot spiral bound, with two volumes, one the stuff you need to know, the other the fluff and pictures.
Considering doing this also to 40k, but need to get the full sized rulebook first. The diddy one is nice but the codexes are bigger. Now a codex where you have an A4 cover with two A5 books inside - one the rules and list, the other the fluff and pictures would be seriously nice, the inside cover as a reference screen...

Well the new rules will make magic more inconvenient and random, combat quicker and spears will be the weapon of choice. They're making it simpler for 12 year old thickies again so that they sell more fantasy boxes and not just space marines.

I've never played Fantasy but I like some of it's miniatures, particularly Bretonian and Chaos. Maybe I'll give a try to this new edition.

I haven't bothered with WHFB since they removed the pic of the troll making orc stew. So it has been quite some time. What i have done on the other hand is collecting empire minis.
But I must confess that I am getting a bit curious about this edition. After all they are bragging about all the changes to gameplay the've made.

Actually its a pity that 40K & WHFB have diverged as much as they have, used to be "interesting" the systems being compatible.
40k assaulting a fantasy force... or the locals finally plucking up courage to take on that irritating base the devils from the sky have established.
Local group are apparently only playing 8th edition from now on, so I guess I'll discover how it runs and see if Thangrot & his boyz 'n' gobbos manage. They couldn't do much worse :-)
Considering a few 40k bits on fantasy bases, and no reason not to do the other way round at all :-)
