Alongside the 221st Guards Infantry and the 37th Rifles (Marines) I've started a small Eldar force, the key driver being to have something that allows me to play around with Hit & Fade tactics and a vastly more mobile game.
Without going IG Air Cavalry or Blood Angels...
Currently have two squads of ten Dire Avengers, who from their stats should live up to at least half their name, hope to add a Farseer later this week and then build up over a couple of weeks.
Q: The basic concept is for an all mechanised force of Aspect Warriors & jetbikes, to which end the "next" items on the list are a pair of Wave Serpents, to be followed by a third with some Fire Dragons in it, very possibly also ending up as two of them.. am I mad? or is there hope yet...
Q: any ideas on the obvious pitfalls? stuff that looks good on paper but just plain doesn't work?
Also figure with Dark Eldar coming out soon one of the semi-warm bodies at my local club will go for them, and the only other guy who fields Eldar hasn't painted them so at least we can have something painted to annoy the "badies" with.
Concept is a bunch of Pirates (going back to 1st edition there), to be a dark green/gold colour, aspect pansies in their own colours.
Thoughts? Advice? suggestions on what pills to take?

Q: any ideas on the obvious pitfalls? stuff that looks good on paper but just plain doesn't work? Fast attack choices, dark reapers, defender guardians and and phoenix lords fire dragons are near legendary in AT 2x5 dragons in serpents kick ass and are relatively cheap never take serpents without spirit stones

And if you really wanted to be cruel you could put those Dragons in a Falcon, and give your opponent something to worry about.
Otherwise yeah, Eldar FA are okay, nothing that really stands out. Banshee's will almost never make it to your opponents battleline since every single AP4 weapon will come their way, not to mention every AT weapon will concentrate on their Serpent if you take it.
Reapers used to be really good against Marines. Now their just okay, those Heavy slots are better for other things. Defender Guardians are just a 10 wound Heavy weapon these days. Stick to Avengers if you want good solid infantry.
But yeah, Havoc hit in on the head.

They're 4+, only thing keeping them from being about as tough as tissue paper. But since they're only T3 a decent round of fire from a couple Heavy Bolters will make short work of the unit.

Scorpions are nice too, they tear up riff raff units with ease even without a power claw. Not to mention they at least have an armor save, and can outflank because of the infiltrate Exarch ability.

Well starting to paint up the first five Dire Avengers, given the amount of mech round here planning a fully mechanised list prob two squads of Fire Dragons, mechanised, will think about a falcon as a ride as well
spirit stones... Will make a note

Progress, slow but progress.
Now have the first sqaud of Dire Avengers all bu finished (need to base five of them), a farseer who also needs basing (plus another one and three warlocks waiting in the wings for assembly), a Fire Dragon Exarch (with fusion gun) again awaiting basing, a sqaud of Fire Dragons with another Exarch (who will get the flamer) unopened, the first of what will be a handful of jet bikes more or less complete except for markings. Plus five Pathfinders who are about 2/3 finished...
no vehicles other than the bike as yet, waiting for some magnets to arrive to allow me to swap weapons about before getting any, but the "first pass" will be a pair of serpents and a Falcon so the core infantry don't need to walk.
Nice models, makes a nice change from painting camoflauge or fantasy orcs.

Going with Biel-Tan currently, reason being the colours as much as anything. The codex seems to imply they are hit and run merchants, which fits the mechanised assault concept I'm working with.
Only things with the colours so far are a single jet bike which does look nice in deep green/white and the farseer with a green/white cloak, plus a couple of green/white bits on the rangers, though thier coat hides most of it.
Not got a huge amount of the background outside the codex as it currently stands so going with my own concept as much as anything. Hit & Run Raiders, with mysterious objectives
