I'm considering getting some tyranids to scare my little guardsmen with... and was looking into a big monsters style list (as I don't want the painting involved in another horde army) and was also looking to keep the price as low as possible.
the first list I createds was as follows:
trygon prime x 3 tyranid warriors x 8 (becomes 2 troop units) tyranid prime x 1
which makes a bit above 1000 points for the least amount of cash...
then I created this list:
Trygon Prime x 1 Mawloc x 2 Tyranid warriors x 5 Tyranid Prime x 1 Hormagaunts x 24 Raveners x 3
again a little over 1000 points with a lot more options of play
I'd like to get zoanthropes (for the ranged psychic attacks), lictors (to assist the mawloc and ravener deep striking) and venomthropes (for the hormagaunts and tyranids)...and possibly a hive tryrant... to help get it up to a 1500+ army
making an army that mainly deep strikes, and is full of my favourite monsters...
I don't like the guns on tyranids so would be fitting everything with close assault stuff so would like to know if its better to have 2 pairs of scything claws or 1 pair scything and 1 pair rending on raveners and tyranids?
I'm aware snipers / poisoned weaponry is a problem for high toughness creatures, is there any other stuff to watch out for?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts, Tready

i have been a tyranid player for a while ad i can tell you tyranids function best at 1500pt +.
a unit or two of hive guard will rip tanks, while a trygon prime will provide heavy support and synapse, i just love the mawloc model so i throw it in with my trygon. throwing in a winged tyrant will kill high toughness unit as will a pair of carnifex (yes i know i said it) with scything talons. venomthropes and zoanthropes are strong support units. and finally, never take old one eye (trust me). tyrannofex are the most intimidating unit against guard.
hope i could help, also, feel free to pm me any questions

as will a pair of carnifex (yes i know i said it) Nothing wrong with fexs As another nid player, I think that you may be missing something with the 'no shooty' option, as having a shooty/combat army has worked well for me, as it can move, shoot and still bite off faces left right and centre. I do like your theamed warrior list though, at 1k it could be quite fun. I'd stick on rending claws, as its always a bonus against high armour armies
