I wonder about that as well. In the GG novels its 5 squas per platoon. But you won't notice that before the later books. Especially before "His last command"

Most squads are lead by either a corporal or a sergeant. Officers give out orders. Thats why the chain o' command is there, so some crazy little hillbilly sarge doesnt start giving insane commands.

I resemble that remark Commissar. Ain't nuttin wrong with some hillbilly barking orders especailly when some wet behind the ear greenhorn Officer who is still reading the instructions to his mess kit don't know which end of the lasgun is the dangerous end.
Now you just be careful where you go walking in them thar woods wouldn't want you to step into some cow paddy and get that spit shine dirty now would we.
