So I got bored and decided to write out some fluff. C+c are welcome and there will be more to follow. This is actually the longest thing I have written in a few years so i hope it isn't unreadable. I really need to relearn semi colons...
Edit 19/03/11: Changed the regiment number to better fit with the numbering I have added to the models. I thought being both the 7th company and the 7th regiment would be a bit off. Added the specific regiment and company info, as well as a bit before that about how the foundings worked. Also edited for spelling.
Tvashtan 422nd "Fire Leopards"
Linebreaker Regiment
History
The world of Tvashtar is located in the Halcyon sector, located in the north of Segmentum Tempestus. It was once a beautiful oceanic paradise, consisting of hundreds of small islands and one mountainous continent near the equator. During the age of strife the human populace of Tvashtar was cut off from the rest of the galaxy by a large warp storm. Visible from the planet's surface and blotting out the stars; the populace referred to it as the "unquiet void". Few records remain of this period but what is known is that the Tvashtan developed a unified federal government, consisting of the many hundred island nations and centred in the mountainous continent of Lemnos.
This state of affairs continued quite amicably until M36 when the unquiet void calmed and the majesty of the galaxy once again became visible to the Tvashtan. A month of celebration and feasting was declared. On the final night of celebrations a bright light appeared in the sky and the people praised it as the return of their long silent god. The Imperium had arrived.
A badly damaged Adeptus Mechanicus Ark vessel had dropped out of warpspace close to the planet and slowly fell into it's gravity well. With most of the crew dead or incapacitated and all of it's attendant fleet lost from an unknown event, the ship crashed straight into the capital city of Lemnos. The power of the resultant drive detonation caused the surface of the planet to crack and the whole continent to fall beneath the waves. As Lemnos sank it caused a high, stable plateau to rise on the opposite side of the planet. During what came to be known as "The Pyroclasm", the seas slowly boiled as molten lava poured into them from the many fissures in the planet's surface and a supervolcano took the place of the old capital. This volcano came to be known as "The Harbinger of Lemnos" and spewed forth huge clouds of sulphurous gasses and molten rock.
It is hard to believe that any of the populace could survive such an event. However, as the world shook and the skies darkened, the Tvashtan of the islands took to their boats and sailed away from the fire that could be seen on the horizon. By chance many of them happened upon the stable landmass that had appeared and began to colonise it. Naming it Sonmel, in order to remember the fallen, they went about the horrendous task of survival and rebuilding as the world boiled and burned around them.
The world eventually settled into a volcanic wasteland, scarred by fiery lines across its surface and clouds of sulphurous gasses in its valleys. The high plateau of Sonmel had been successfully claimed and the Tvashtan lived a hard life, using the few water deposits that had survived and living off bacteria grown in deep caverns.
Unknownst to the anyone, all of the crew of the Mechanicus vessel had not perished in the crash. The Archmagos Explorator had survived within a void shielded stasis pod. Able to resist the intense heat of the supervolcano the pod eventually came to rest on the slopes of The Harbinger. Emerging from his pod the Archmagos saw the devestation and believed it was his divine mandate to colonise this new planet for the machine god. Remembering little of his own identity the Archmagos reactivated the servitors that he was stored with and proceeded to build.
These two disparate civilisations developed independantly for many years until the great Tvashtan explorers Garran and Strafeud Brightson proceeded with their famed expedition in 376.M37. In the airship "Horizon" they searched for other land masses stable enough for expansion. The search continued in vain until they drew close to the Harbinger. Spotting what seemed to be a landing pad, they landed and were greeted by the sight of a warren of tunnels full of mines, smelteries and forges. Over hundreds of years the Archmagos had just continued to build and excavate inside the volcano, taming its fires and using them to expand his building projects. The brothers found the Archmagos at work in his forge and sought an audience with him. Long having replaced what little body he still had with cybernetics, it took a while for the Archmagos to communicate with them. Suprised by the pressence of outsiders, the Archmagos was pleased with the company and took the brothers on as apprentices, calling them the Cabeiri. Having forgotten his own name over the years, the Brightson's referred to him as Hephaestus and believed that he was cast down from heaven due to his ugly visage.
After several years the Brightsons returned to Sonmel surrounded by the technology they had learned of. They were looked upon with awe and appointed consuls of Sonmel. This heralded an age of cooperation and expansion for both the nation of Sonmel and the forge of Hephaestus, which came to be known as Hephaestium Forge. Technology and manpower were traded for many years and both grew prosperous and large. By the time contact with the Imperium was reestablished in 564.M38, by a passing trade vessel, Sonmel had become a huge hive city and Hephaestium was a maze of workshops and forges. Hephaestus had returned to his stasis pod, which now formed the focal point of a huge throne room. The hive city of Sonmel was ruled over by two consuls, referred to as Cabeiri in honour of the first consuls. A prosperous trade route had been set up with their ally across the globe, with airships plying the sky carrying wares through the skies.
Due to the influence of the Archmagos it was relatively easy to spread Imperial doctrine to Tvashtar. Missionaries set about the task of spreading the Imperial Creed to the populace and the Administratum started to bring the planet into the bureaucractic fold. Envoys from the Adeptus Mechanicus descended upon Hephaestium and brought it into the structure of the Mechanicum.
So Tvashtar was brought into the Imperium and became a productive world. Its chief exports are manufactured goods whilst it imports all kinds of foods, luxury goods and materials needed for construction. The forge of Hephaestium has been subsumed into the mechanicum but still maintains good relations with Sonmel. Sonmel itself is now a huge hive that produces all kinds of goods as well as regiments for the Guard.
Culture
Where once life on Tvashtar was rugged and hard it is now an almost typical hive life. Almost everyone lives in either the hive city of Sonmel or the Forge warrens of Hephaestium. To be an artisan or engineer is one of the highest accolades and those who can construct or mine are regarded well. Life is seen as a struggle against the elements through superior engineering. From an early age children are taught how to repair small objects and how to listen to the structures and machines all around them. Also they will have built up a resistance to the acrid atmosphere from birth as the hive does not heavily filter the air from outside. The children most skilled with technology are sent to Hephaestium to become Techpriests as an eternal payment for the bounties of technology visited upon them.
Tithe
Although technically classified as a death world because of the vast expanses of shifting fire wastes that take up most of the planets surface, Tvashtan produces a large quantity of men and machines for the Imperium. Highly skilled in constuction and demolition, and well equipped with vehicles, the armies of Tvashtar are sought after for many theaters. All men are drawn from the PDF and will have spent several years operating across the cracked surface of the planet. During this time they will learn how to read the land exeptionally well, so as to avoid loss of life and equipment to the shifting fires that are ever present on the surface. Military action usually comprises of dealing with pirate outposts and outlaw dens, who prey upon cargo freighters. Due to the wealth of military supplies being transported these can be well armed.
Every year a regiment is raised and sent out to the Emperor's wars. They will be fully equipped and ready for battle. Unusually, regiments comprise of infantry, recon, armoured and artillery companies, which work together when on depoloyment. Each regiment is also given a gift from Hephaestium before it departs, a single shadowsword as penance for the destruction they visited upon the world.
Each time a regiment was founded it took on a new number, equal to the number of years since the rediscovery of the world by the imperium. However, once the total number of founded regiments reached 999 it was decided that old numbers should be recycled to preserve the continuity of the numbering system. This means that each regiment is refounded exactly one thousand years after the previous regiment of that number.
Of course, every thousand years the thousandth regiment is called upon to be founded, which by some bureaucratic error means that a regiment is given the number 000. This causes no end of problems for the command of this regiment, and many call it a cursed regiment. It is also referred to by some as the "Void Regiment". Of the three void regiments that have been founded, the first was lost in the warp upon its departure from Tvashtar. The story of the second void founding is steeped in mystery, as it was requisitioned by Inquisitor Adora of the Ordo Xenos shortly after the completion of its first campaign. At this point it passed into legend. Of the third regiment there are no records.
The Tvashtan 422nd
The history of the Tvashtan 422nd began with its founding in 985.M38, when the regiment was first founded. It first saw action in the wars againt Gruntsmasha Faceripper, warlord of a growing ork waaagh. Acquitting themselves admirably, they soon found themselves cast into war after war until the regiment was subsumed into the Tvashtan 441st and the regimental number was retired.
The fourth founding of the 422nd took place in 985.M41. They were first sent off to fight the rebel worlds of the Tarak gulf, who had risen against Imperial rule and joined forces with the traitorous forces of the archenemy. However, even though they performed admirably the campaign was halted and the regiment was redeployed. Since that time they have faced many foes, from the fallen Eldar to the scourge of the Tyranids.
The regiment is named after an animal native to the fire wastes of Tvashtar. The fire leopard is a big cat with fiery red fur and an extreme resilience to heat. Some even say that it can breath fire, although this has never been corroborated. They live in the sulphur valleys and stalk the plains, preying on the huge lizards that live aross the surface of the planet.
The 7th company
The 7th company of the 422nd is lead by Lieutenant-Colonel Enoch Trabinets and has several supporting companies from elsewhere in the regiment. The 7th comprises of several line infantry platoons and a mechanised engineer platoon. Attached to this are the 3rd tank company as well as several elements of abhumans, artillery and recon units.
The 7th has prospered under Trabinets' leadership, ever since the disappearance of his former commander, Colonel Gavinrad. This event happened during planetfall on the chaos held world of Gynax-Lombar, shortly after an unusual episode on Tenrei. Gavinrad was captured by archenemy forces on Tenrei and was later rescued by a lightning assault by Trabinets against the main enemy fotification. However, on Gynax-Lombar the 7th found themselves dropped well away from the main battlezone, amidst numerous marines from the Dark Angel chapter. After a short fight, the Astartes spirited Gavinrad away for some unknown reason.
Since that time there have been sporadic attacks from the forces of the Dark Angels against the 7th, they seem to appear from nowhere and press their agenda against the company on all manner of battlefields. Their purpose of these skirmishes remains unknown. When reported to the higher echelons, these attack are put down to the work of a rogue astartes chapter who are thought to mimic the Dark Angels, but the truth is somewhat more worrying.
