Strangely enough a project not unlike this one was made for the old terrain book. the main engine compartment was made from a pop can and the cargo bay was made from an old starwars toy. ah '96, back when GW didn't make terrain for you. how i miss those days. lol, I own that book. Now everybody knows how long I have been in the hobby.

It is a shame GW moved away from promoting DIY terrain and slumping for profits with their own expensive stuff. Although the buildings etc are good, they still should promote creativity from their customers / enthusiasts (spell).

I think it's good to have the option to have great looking terrain with minimal effort, it's good for lazy people (like me) who want an awesome table and cant be bothered making their own.
The option is still there to make custom terrain, and GW still uses a lot of custom stuff (look in the SW codex for example, most of that is made rather than produced), its just that less people are willing to do it.

I'm not saying its bad that gw produce terrain. I just think they should promote players to use there imagination more like they used too. Older gamers learnt from wd articals where as new gamers don't.

I agree with soap and the rest of us,That's one of the main reasons I got into this hobby,Is all of the creativity and conversions you can come up with.WD had quite a few articles for conversions on tanks/ rhinos/terrain from other hobbyist, that is why I saved all my WD starting from issue 98. Nothing is out of the question,I mean it is in the way future so.... get to building to your hearts content. That is If you have the time

Older gamers learnt from wd articals where as new gamers don't. I'll definately agree with you on that one, and I too still have a big pile of old white dwarfs (white dwarves? not sure which is grammattically correct in this situation!) for the same reason. IF I HAVE TIME!!!! ;D

I think it was in the Rogue Trader book (40k 1st ed) that they encouraged people to build their own vehicles and showed a hover tank built from an old deodorant bottle.
Now its getting to the point that GW wont let you into their tournaments unless its 100% GW (including the paint.)

How can they police the use of paint? Unless its that crappy airfix paint. Gw should promote home made terrain. I can understand they don't want you to make your own vehicles for games, but unless the model isn't available to buy, or its a conversion of a gw model then I don't see a problem. I think gw can go and do dirty things with a goat if they are going to be picky about such things. They should count them selves lucky to have such a fan base. Some home made models are better than production ones!

People can still find really great scratch built stuff and tutorials on the net but in the past you'd see scratch built terrain in the stores, built by the local gurus and staff. You got inspired to make it.
Now when I go into a GW I only seem to see GW terrain. It looks cool but isn't it boring seeing the same terrain repeated all the time (is it the same in other stores?). With any luck seeing the same terrain all the time inspires people to build something different.

Yeah walking into one GW store is the same as any other. I travel alot, so used to enjoy a trip into a new GW store to see something new and exciting. But now you just get the same old thing. Same boards, so chat from the staff, the same force selling by the staff, and regardless of how far from GW store you live, practactly begged to 'bring your army down'.

So, how would you go about building the downed ship? What materials would you use? What tips would you recomend for such a project?

I'm planning to use paper mache, a coke can and some plaster of paris strips, and a single GW door to make an anderson shelter style bunker. The plan will be the coke can will be the basis, then paper mache to make the slopes, the plaster of paris on strips will then make the surface flat with the gw door on one side, paint it brown then static grass it.

Your right but those were the days, well I would take a 1/96 scale revell/monogram sailing ship hull like the "constitution" as a base for the crafts hull for starters it has a similar shape when turn upside down,And go from there.

I am always amazed at how long everyone here has been in the hobby. Some days i think i am a relic, and i'm only 27! I loved the old books, and there is always the appeal of finding new uses for garbage. anyways materials for the spacecraft. 1) There are parts of the Pegasus Chemical Plant in there. 2) Engine cones can be made from small plastic plant pots - avaliable at your local hardware store 3) Bits and pieces from the Mechanicum Factory 4) Packing plastic from a computer, the pieces that run along the gunnels. 5) Plastic tubing, found at home depot (connector bits are cheap and about the right size) 6) Styrene I bars and textured sheets 7) Green plastic single rose tubes make great looking torpedoes For more ideas take a look at Damn i love the old stuff

Children of 1984, awesome I feel even more at home ;-) 1985 was better. Actually, I would have been concieved in 1984 so it is a pretty good year too! I definitely should not be feeling old at 25 though, although people do say I'm like an old man. Now all I need is a shotgun and a lawn to guard.

Now go fetch granpa here a beer while I sit on the porch and try to remember what the world was like before there where computers in every home.
