Ok, maybe I'm really -really- really dumb on this one, but last night I came up with a great method to facilitate freehand designs:
First, practice the design you want on a piece of paper a few times. Make sure you know what you want, as changing it midway is possible, it just takes time to paint over your original design.
Once you have practiced enough and feel up to the task, the next step can start: Find a decent pen. I used a gel pen, which takes a while to dry but allows for good control. Draw your design on the surface of your choice. Be sure that you account for the flow of the material, be it cloth or metal, armaplas or plasteel and draw your design accordingly.
Wait for it to dry, if necessary. Once you´ve done that, all you have to do is fill in the colours. Heck, if you´ve got a good pen for it, you might as well just fill up the design with them!

I usually use a pencil: You can rub it out if you make a mistake

I'm thinking about making some kind of stencil with the pattern I want, the transfers just never come out how I want them to.

The real issue with transfer I find is that if you put a wash on after, it doesn't stick and you get a big shiny patch. If you wash before them, they end up too bright

seal the model surface first with gloss varnish, stick the transfer on then seal it with matt varnish

You mean put the transfer on, then varnish, then do the wash and highlights, then varnish again?

So at what point would the aforementioned wash go on?
