I have been very reliably informed that the cost of 'white metal' alloy is set to increase by 30%!! I know this is already causing massive problems for smaller companies such as Heresy miniatures, but as an off-shoot of this there is another rumour (fairly reliable) that GW will be suspending the use of white metal altogether and looking at using resin instead! I dread to think how this is going to affect our wallets, has anyone else heard anything of this kind?

I think it's going to result in a price increase either way, so if anyone wants any metal models, they should get them now...

yeah thats what Andy at Heresy is recommending, he's also considering stopping production of some of his larger models...

To be frank, (I'll revert back to beiung Gabriel later) I'm getting kind of surprised GW are still making anyform of metal models. If you read a lot of what they say regarding their moulding processes and the details they can put in (by cramming more on each sprue so individual components can be cast seperately - thereby negating mould line issues with sowrds for example), it seems metal models have had their day. I suppose it's just lucky for me that pretty much anything I particularly "need" or "want" is either avaialble in plastic or is a Resin only model anyway... Does really suck for smaller companies such as Heresy miniatures though

To be honest I think its for a few reason, tradition being one of them, traditional sculpting techniques and such, also two-part rubber moulds for metal casting are cheaper than plastic injection moulds and vacuum resin moulds, and until now at least, the white metal itself was cheaper than resin, at least with Forgeworld under their wing the quality should still be first rate

A similar thing happened with brass and copper a couple of years ago: anything solid brass just became way more expensive. Edit : Damn! I need to buy those Bob Olley ogryns sooner, rather than later. www.olleysarmies.co.uk/sfogres.html

*Sigh*
It looks like my ogryn dreams are going to be a bit further in the future then. At least I got Nork though.

Well plastic would be nice I suppose, but I doubt it would happen. If they ended up looking like those WHFB ogres I would burn the moulds though. I hate those things.
I think that I am ok on the pewter front other than that. Nothing is leaping to mind.

I think that I am ok on the pewter front other than that. Nothing is leaping to mind. If they did make them I imagine a sensible goal would be to make them compatible with the fantasy ogres but distinct so you could get the best out of kitbashing. Still I guess GW would have quite a few kits to replace and they already have irons in the fire for models that don't have kits yet so I guess I should get myself some Kroxigors and a couple of lictors sooner rather than later. Though I might just ebay up some of the sweet earlier models of those things.

Personally I loved the Ogre Bull kit. You can't deny it was a pretty unique kit, and there are plenty of superb conversions done on that kit. Like ssgtdude's lady ogryns.

Internally the long term plan was always to do away with metal altogether, though that was supposed to happen after everything bar special characters was in plastic and we're still 4 maybe 5 years from that.
Interestingly Mantic have just started producing their metal figures in some kind of new, high detail, less brittle resin, with promising results. Will be interesting to see if GW adopt similar tech.
It's all irrelevant to me, I have't bought a metal 40k or Warhammer fig in 7 years or so. Does make me fear for what's left of the specialist games range though.

Although if you think it through logically, if you have a large collection of metal minis, you're minted. Time to go to eBay!

Had a quick fiddle with some resin/plastic figures last night, they were pretty much as advertised. Felt like plastic with a similar quality of detail, but "bendier" than resin. Indeed the figures had long lances and they felt pretty much like plastic ones for strength (not that I bent them far, I believe it's bad form to snap another man's models, even in the name of science.
Only significant difference seems to be that you use superglue to stick it.
If this is the future, then I might actually use "metal" models again.

It's a female dog to stick to something without superglue (currently I use a combination of super and plastic) so you have to keep that on hand...

Resin has been cheaper than metal for a long time, it's just that making a good resin mini costs more than making a half-decent metal one. If they had just sucked it up, and converted their materials a while back, they'd be fine. They'd still raise prices, of course.
