I've just been painting up a bunch of Gretchin from the £9.25 pack of 10 grots and a grot herd and I was musing over the best way to get a bunch of the little guys that didn't just repeat the same designs over and over.
The bitz section has some oiler grots and ammo runts. Or I could try and convert some. Or maybe I could buy some goblin kits from the fantasy range. Or I could pick up some of those old 2nd edition, identically posed, Gretchin.
Any tips?

In my experience there are two answers to this problem.
This first is said by GW: No! Shut up and field more Orks. I don't know why, but I have a sneaking suspicion the repetition it’s to deter people from using massed Gretchen cover saves.
The second is said by many Ork players: You will find it hard to make unique grots but is well worth it.
Failing that I suggest you just field empty bases, it will be obvious they are grots and the tactical uses are worth it

Empty bases would make me feel sad I think I'll have to go for the second option. I do already have one interesting conversion in mind involving the aftermath of trying to use a mass of Gretchin to physically block up a Monolith portal.

I support the converting from Goblins method. I did a batch like this back when I ran Orks regularly, because the only grots available then were in metal, and cost something like US$3.50 per Model. So I got a box of Goblins, cut a bunch of extra Sluggas off unused arms, and bam! cheap, varied grots!

And GW won't attack you for not using their models...

Which kits did you use/avoid, any recomendations?

I just used the basic Goblin Regiment box, and sluggaz from the Ork Boyz kit in place of the bows or spears. The Night Goblins might make a better base if you're running Bad Moonz or DeathSkullz, though. Oh, and you need to pick up a mess of 25mm round bases, of course.

I seem to have ended up with a fair few spare bases from battle sets, or you can order them from GW as packs of bases.

Yeah, GW sells spare bases. They're under the Paints and Tools tab on their main store page. Or you can usually find them significantly cheaper from the various Bitz websites out there, eBay, or individual traders.

A great idea, I do have a few of the old metal ones mixed in too though. Converted goblins sound nice and easy though (and cheap!)

The metal ones were great in and of themselves, they were just too expensive and didn't have enough variety to make a proper-sized Mob. If you're running 20+ Grots, you really want more than 5 poses.
I wish I had gotten around to picking up a pack or two of them, just to sprinkle through my Mobs for extra variety.

That is a very crisp photo. The Soviet goblin look is pretty niffty at that.

When I started playing orks I was lucky enough to be able to buy thirty or so of the old ones painted. They all look the same except for paint schemes and a few minor conversions but hey! they're supposed to look the same and have no distinguishing features. They die en masse and it's not like the orks care when they do.
"Oh no! Me grot slave juzt dieded!"
"Which wun?"
"Eh, dunno. The wun on da left..."

Night Goblins in white robes...this gives me an excellent poor taste idea.

haul yourself on ebay my friend and pick up some of the older edition grots with lasguns, there all the same pose, but they look decent and go for pretty darn cheap

I was given 40 or so of the old plastic gretchen when I was starting out...then I converted orcs from HeroQuest for my runtherds. After that I got myself a Big Mek and that's how my Ork army got started.
Like Dave said, you can find them really cheap on ebay most of the time.
I've since replaced some with a pack of metal grots and one of the new plastic kits, and did some head swaps on others to help blend things up a bit.

I think the lack of variety in grots is that they all are clones and don't have as large of a selection of armor bits, helmets, don't grow when they are kill en stuff and given poor weapons because they are living land mine detonators ( who wants to spend lots teef on some thing that will never be used to kill stuff.)

Nah I'm happy for you. I got a bunch of 2nd Ed gretchin from Empirespy and I ordered on of everything from the collectors section for old metal gretchin so I'm chewing through converting some of the 2nd Ed models and painting them all up nicely. I still need to grab some gobbos at somepoint though.
