Thread necromancy. People posting in old threads isn't what bothers me it's posters getting all butthurt over it.
Why?
Is there a fundamental reason NOT to post in old threads?
Logically people might not feel inclined to respond again to another "How do you use Creed post?" which obviously harms the community as a whole. Think about it...people come on here to learn and share ideas and if say westrider or McCaptain(two posters of whom I read every line of text because I consider them highly tactics minded) have already posted on a half dozen similar threads they may feel like it's a burden to answer the same questions over and over. That harms the forum as a whole, does it not? Or worse yet it may drive away new comers.
I mean in all seriousness this board doesn't see a lot of action as many others. There are threads on the front page that are considered 'dead'. Why not lock the threads when they get old? Save all the drama and hassle.

I think that necromancy on this forum need to be considered on a case by case basis. It really depends on what the thread is about or if someone is doing it excessively.

Not only threads on the first page. You can get yelled at for posting on and necroing stickied threads.
Which as you say is easier for new members to listen to if they know that there is a valid reason behind it.

Which is why I generally avoid doing anything about it unless it's a particularly inane comment, wrong, deviant, or in a thread that wasn't particularly awesome to begin with and I secretly wanted dead anyway.

Trickstick has it right. If a thread isn't a project log, and it's been dead for a while, we generally frown on lifting it back to life. Most stickied threads should be safe to necromance, as well as Project logs if the person who started them is still around (The easiest way to check is to click on their user name and look at the last time they were online). Generally, there are worse sins on this forum, but we as mods step when someone complains about it.
I'm more or less indifferent to the principle behind it. As I understand it, it's really just to keep the stale threads from coming back up, especially since we tend to derail threads pretty severely before they die, so sometimes a fresh start is a good idea. For thinks like character and unit tacticas, I don't mind a bit of necromancy, but we have the Big IG Tactica for those things too. Part of it is also to avoid drowning newer content by bringing up old posts as well.
As I said in the rules, if you're not sure, please ask. RT and I are here to help clarify anything if we can.

I figure as long as the new comment is on-topic, and the topic isn't something silly, then reusing the same thread is a good idea - it keeps topics contained, and makes referencing something easier.
