Wherein we beat history with a baseball bat. Victoria II (or Vicky), is a grand strategy game set in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, pick any nation you want and try to bring it to glory! So the last couple of days I've been on-off playing Vicky II as the Confederate States of America, I've just finished (or the game has become impossible to continue, I've become the most powerful nation on earth, no one can stand against me, etc). Here is a few screenies of my eventual successes: End screen summary Diplomacy screen North America: Californian Republic on the far left, then Nevada (which was shortly annexed by Mexico), the remains of the USA, New English Michigan and Indiana, the CSA, and New English Massachusetts. The Caribbean and Latin America, I control Cuba, Panama, North Venezuela and Central Bolivia. Confederate Africa, the largest colonial state upon that continent. Next I think I'll try to lead France to supreme power...

I'm not sure what happened, New England, Nevada, and California all got independence following several disastrous wars with me for the USA, I'm guessing more states decided to leave the sinking ship that was the Union.

Something about this game seems pretty awesome but the idea that the confederates would take over that much seems pretty ridiculous to me esp in 50 or so years. Dunno if everybody would've left the union like that but after a few failed wars who knows.

Something about this game seems pretty awesome but the idea that the confederates would take over that much seems pretty ridiculous to me esp in 50 or so years. Dunno if everybody would've left the union like that but after a few failed wars who knows. The USA had to give me those states after I defeated them in several wars, which they started in an effort to return me to the Union. First I took Philly, then NY, finally West Virginia, in these further Civil Wars. New England had split off, and after a while I decided they too, would be better placed in the Confederacy, they were Invaded and NE was annexed. I also decided that due to crippling shortages of Fried Chicken, Kentucky should be taken from the evil hands of the Union. Also Indiana because I wanted it. they were invaded and too, joined the Confederacy. It was at this time that California and Nevada split from the Union too, after the UK invaded Montana. The Union was left a mess largely from my machinations, do not forget that Mexico was also my faithful ally in all of these wars, and often rampaged up the west coast, while I dismantled the East and Midwest. These constant wars exhausted the USA, which prevented it from ever become the power it was historically. They were also having serious problems with rebels, whenever I invaded the US, I spent most of my time fighting there own rebels rather than there military. For Africa: I invaded and annex Zululand (an independent African state, and from there colonized my way north. The UK declared war on me to contain my growing power, but were defeated when my armies crossed the Canadian border and conquered most of Ontario and Quebec. In the peace treaty I received most of the British Cape colony.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Only sad thing is the idea that slavery probably prospered very much during all this.

That kind of feels pointless in a way. Why would you hate the union so much then? Also why would you have territory in africa?

1. Slavery was far from the only reason we had a civil war.
2. The same reason every other country in the world wanted colonies in Africa.

That kind of feels pointless in a way. Why would you hate the union so much then? Also why would you have territory in africa? Because they kept trying to invade me after I defeated them in the first Civil War. All European states that had colonies in Africa had prohibited slavery. The scramble for Africa wasn't because of slavery, but prestige and wealth from resources, the best example for this is the Belgian Congo, which allowed a relatively minor state in Europe to grow fat from a virtual monopoly on rubber.

1. Slavery was far from the only reason we had a civil war. 2. The same reason every other country in the world wanted colonies in Africa. Oh i know that wasn't the only reason for the civil war. There was the idea of state's rights. However the south and north hated each other and the basic difference of culture was based around slavery and slaves. That's the thing though part of the war was because it had to do with their way of life. Just freeing the slaves not long after feels kind of pointless. They argued slaves were property and therefore protected by the constitution. I can understand the union would want to re-unite but i still feel a good part of the point of the war was about the slaves. Sure not all slave states seceded from the union but quite a few did and they did it because it threatened their way of life and slavery.
