ok folks i'm up against dark elder this friday in a 2500 pt game. So i'm planning lots of Chims(5), hell hounds(3) & sents(3), in my list and kitting my troop choices out on the cheap with flamers and hvy bolters, and just going for bags of shots i appreciate that in combat i will be spanked. and his lances can nail all my tanks easy. so i'm avoiding high cost, tough units. and just going to meat grind my opponent down so that he simply cannot kill enough of my troops to win, any one any advice? or does my basic plan sound realistic?

just try not to let them devide you up and cut you to pieces, they're only going to be concered with attack so its up to you to play defensive, hammer their raiders till there is nothing left and try to blast all the others with your big guns(heavy bolters) before they can close in for close combat.

i smashed a DE army at 500pts in 2/3 turns. (can't quite remember). he had a jetbike thingy to bring in reserves. a raider a wytch lord and wyches. blew up raider and jetbike in first turn and my grenadiers (old codex) blew apart the wytches wit my kasrkin sarge taking her last wound

I've never had much luck with reavers and at 500 points they are probably a bit of a waste...it also sounds like your opponent was doing a wytch cult army which isn't so hot either...(the wytch cult went out of fashion at the end of 4th edition with the new consolidation rules.)
It very is possible to smoke the DE in 2-3 turns... I've lost with them plenty...but I've also taken it the other way and annihilated 500 points worth of SMurfs with my DE in just so many turns.
what I find that works is... small warrior squads double packing heavy weapons and/or special weapons.
a souped up Archon(this guy is the real killer in the whole DE dex...he is a monster...hell...give him an agonizer and he'll bag Wraithlords and Hive Tyrants)
use speed to your advantage...do not attack until you are in position...remember that flat out gives you a 4+ invulnerable save and 24 inches to maneuver
Wyches must be mounted, they're only ever worth it if you can get them into CC...give the succubus a agonizer and combat drugs and she is almost as deadly as the Archon...treat the rest of the Wyches like extra wounds...though at I5 and WS4 they're still pretty hand for getting those first kills in, and depending on what you roll for their random drugs they can be quite lethal in their own right...but only if they make it to CC where they get their invulnerable save.

I actually used to run my lord without an Agoniser. As far as I can remember it was...
Archon: Tormenter Helm, Punisher, Combat Drugs, Shadow Field.
The Punisher combined with drugs is simply more effective unless you're gonna meet really tough opponents (bugs etc). But for Marine Killing... Punisher FTW!
And yeh. Reavers have always been simply to expensive at anything less than 1500pts.
Only things I ever used as Dark Eldar were, Mounted Archon with Incubi, Mounted 10 man Wych Squads, Mounted 10man Warriors Squads, 10 man Warrior Sniper Squads with 2 dark lances and the Ravager. Warriors on foot were taken in squads of 20 if i decided to take a Talos ^^

that works too!
the tormeneter helm+Punisher is a pretty good combo
and taking an angonizer against t3 opponents is just a waste.(mine becomes a power weapon at that point.)

I actually think Dark Eldar Warriors are one of the best troops in the game for their cost. Its just a shame alot of the rest of the list is so sucky.
Mandrakes with a squad leader and some form of squad upgardes (2 models buying a poisen that always wounds on a 3+ or somthing) for example, would turn a useless unit into somthing worth considering.

Yup.
They've actually made a bit of a comeback in 5th Edition due to the emphasis on Objective grabbing, which their inherent speed lends quite well towards.

Just want to point pout that the flat out gives a cover save, not an invulnerable save.
ymmoT, do it. Prove your heresy.

I am inclined to say no but honestly I'd have to look in my codex and double check just to be sure...
so I'll get back to you on that.
