I have decided upon a classic twist of Mafia using Warhammer 40K and focusing on Chaos. I have thought of using different cults, but a Genestealer Cult would be 'obvious' and a Tau cult probably would not use killing as a method of recruitment. With that in mind, I'll give a quick brief of Mafia and my own vision of the game can be played on a forum.
Mafia:
Mafia has different names, but ultimately the mechanics stay the same. The general idea is that your town is under threat of an evil organization that is killing all the folk to take over. However, you as the townies have figured out a way to stop this evil: By Lynching! Now the game plays out that during the Day Phase there is a group discussion and as a group arguments, accusations, etc are brought forth and finally the voting begins. Once the votes are tallied, the lynching happens and the group learns that player's Character Card. This is usually either a Mafia or a Townie. However there are other character cards, but more on that later. This leads the game into the Night Phase. During the Night Phase, players with "Night Only" abilities use their actions and then the Night Phase ends. Usually at night the Mafia works and kills a player. The dead player's character card and death is revealed in the next Morning Phase.
Depending on your character card will determine your overall goal to achieve in this game:
-Mafia's goal is to kill all townies where as the townies have to kill all the Mafia.
This is Mafia in a nutshell. Not much changes when translating the game into a forum based game.
This Mafia Game has been changed slightly to reflect a Warhammer 40K background and an evil Chaos Cult setting up shop offering victims every night to their Dark Masters. Thus Character Cards will have different names, but each card will contain a brief explanation of your abilities. If clarification is required, just reply back asking for more information or an example. Mafia are referred to as Cultists and Townies are called Imperials to show the differences in names.
Character Cards:
I will not reveal all of the character cards that may or may not be in play, but will confirm there are at least two:
Cultist
Imperial
Voting:
Voting only happens during the Day Phase. Remember though, the Mafia will be killing every night and thus keep the population down reducing the numbers slowly. Once a vote is cast, you may NOT change your mind. No changing votes or ideas. To prevent this, I ask all players to NOT edit their posts, even if it is to remove typos. We can forgive you this one time
Voting Format:
I Vote for *Insert Player Name*
Rules:
There are a few golden rules that apply:
- Players will be asked to play accordingly and act as they see fit.
- Do NOT edit posts.
Warnings will be given out for minor transgressions, but auto-lynching can happen if you repeat or break a rule openly.
Plot:
You are living in the settlement of Aspecious, a small sumphole that is living off of a meager living after the Adeptus Mechanicus had stripped the area of all workable metals. Life is hard in Aspecious and most folk are farmers tolerating the hot summers and cold winters that come from living on plains. The settlement has a tavern, a small Chapel, a few shops, a local Tech Priest that maintains the water purifiers and houses roughly a hundred or so families. However, not all is well within the folk of Aspecious as a great evil has sunk its tendrils into the hearts of the Imperials.
It started small with random people going missing every so often, not enough to be noticed, but as the town population fell in numbers, the killers began to get bolder. Now they have assassinated a truly worthy prize, Tech Priest Petricus. The old Tech Priest was found completely devoid of all his bionics, his human flesh tortured beyond imagining, and an 8-Pointed Star branded onto the only flesh remaining, his forehead. At this detection, the local Priest called for everyone to gather and persuaded the Mayor to not report it to the Inquisition. The priest had dealt with the trigger happy Inquisition and knew that the whole town would be destroyed to permanently remove the stain of Chaos.
The Mayor agreed, as a group they would root out the evil and destroy the cult themselves as true loyal children of the Emperor. Thus everyone was gathered and it was agreed that they would vote upon who they thought were in league with the Chaos Cult. The Priest would then hang the victim. It was agreed they would wait till after the Emperor's Day to start the Witch Hunt. The Mayor and his family were found dead the next night and in the morning, the Priest had summoned them all to begin the hunt for the Cultists.
