So what are all your thoughts on this? www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat440004a&rootCatGameStyle=whThe karl franz model also allows for a general of the empire or wizard with a 2-headed griffon to be built. I know i'm crying bullnuts but it seems like the empire has no weaknesses now and has pretty much everything. They have war machines, magical war machines that do a lot of damage, basically knights that ride fast ogre-sized creatures, a character that is a monster killer and a hero character that has magic resist and possibly anti-spell or anti-wizard abilities. How the hell am i supposed to fight the empire if they have every single base covered? This is however without seeing the new army book and to be fair they may have fixed what made the empire so broken in the last book. Not to mention maybe pidgeon bombs have been fixed. Who knows though as maybe they're more broken than ever. I need to read the new army book and find out. I'm still unsure of how to handle the coven throne that the vampire counts currently have. I hear it costs a ton of points so hopefully all these good new units and war machines cost a lot of points (demigryphs, karl franz on deathclaw, new magic engines, etc.).

The new models look quite nice. Karl Franz's griffin is really big and impressive.
Also the new book will probably weaken the old OP stuff. That way they get new toys which are worth fielding and all the old power gamers will need to rebuy to keep their power.

Here's to hoping pidgeon bombs were nerfed somewhat or steam tanks. Seriously it was FAQ'd to have toughness 10, 10 wounds and a +1 armor save. I still can't get over that. Unless you do an initiative test to that thing or use a special weapon like a fellblade or use cannons or maybe a doomwheel that thing is not going down and even should everything go your way your enemy can have more than one of these fornicateers. Whoever pitched the idea of that stat-line along with firing into combat plus an insane gun-line needs to be shot.

Hmmm I was kind of hoping for a more, medieval feel to them. I fear these guys might be getting too wacky

Whoever pitched the idea of that stat-line along with firing into combat plus an insane gun-line needs to be shot. You only need to do a couple of wounds to the very expensive steam tank, then it'll kill itself or do nothing for the rest of the game. It was significantly nerfed since the previous rules. Pigeon bombs are more likely to do nothing or hit the engineer using them than hit their target. In general, the new Empire seems to fit the fluff better. They're meant to have an eccentric mix of magic and technology. They're also the biggest country in the Old World and each region is very different, in my opinion the old army book wasn't diverse enough.

@commissar mael: I think the medieval bit was thrown out the second they started having blackpowder weaponry and repeater pistols and handguns. If you want medieval go for bretonnia. They do it much better. I'm actually confused by the demigryphs somewhat. Shouldn't bretonnia have the mass of cavalry units? Lately several factions are getting powerful cavalry. We've gotten demigryphs and mournfangs. I am not looking forward to fighting either. bomberman: Did you see the new codex on display at a local GW? If so i'd like to know your thoughts and the overall direction the book is going in. Perhaps some gaming info would be nice. I might check out the local GW in a week or so.

@commissar mael: I think the medieval bit was thrown out the second they started having blackpowder weaponry and repeater pistols and handguns. Because no-one in the Medieval period had guns. Nope. No early cannons in that period. No early guns either. Never even happened. No evidence at all.

@f.K.M: I was referring to the current edition army book and how I don't feel it's overpowered, sorry. I'll let you know my thoughts next weekend when the new book comes out.

No early cannons in that period. No early guns either. Never even happened. No evidence at all. Indeed they also had a group of young horsemen carrying repeater pistols which drown the enemy in lead too. bomberman: Meh i think the current book is OP. You've never seen a 3 mortar, 3 engineer, 2 steam tank and 1 cannon list with pidgeon bombs yet have you? Then you go into the items they can take and they're pretty potent. Anyway i gotta get up early in the morning to go to work. Let me know how the new army book is.

Got the book yesterday, don't know if you've seen it yet but here are my thoughts.
It all seems more balanced: All the infantry(except spearmen) have gone up in points. Mortars are now 100 point stone throwers with a large blast. Steam tanks are 50 points cheaper but are more likely to blow up. Detachments became better; they now get any special rules their parent units have eg units attached to greatswords get stubborn.
In general, they seem to be sticking to the same lines; massed infantry backed up with cavalry and wacky warmachines. I've got a game against Empire at the weekend so will let you know how they turn out.

It's not the infantry i'm worried about so much as the insane gunline that'd make guard shed a tear.
I'm also unsure of the demigryph cavalry and the new magical war machines. I don't know enough about the witch hunter to complain but i'm interested in him. If nothing else he looks cool.

Well, handgunners and crossbowmen are more expensive, so are helblasters, helstorms, cannons and mortars. Demigryph knights are 58 points and just inner circle knights on movement 8 rat ogres. Witch hunters are 50 points and really good, they have killing blow and re-roll hits against one enemy character(chosen after deployment). The magical war machines are really good for their points too, but their main weapons are just level 4 bound spells. They're also only toughness 5 with 5 wounds.

The magical war machines don't sound too bad as far as killing them goes (glass cannons maybe?). The demigryph knights should be expensive and still they seem really good. This is still going on what you are saying. I'll need to read the army book myself.
What kind of equipment can witch hunters use?

Can you cast spells on the Steam tank? I'm thinking lore of life regeneration here...

I don't know but i would think so. Also if it's toughness isn't good enough you could always throw down the toughness bonus spell. God i think doing that to anything would make me hate you.
