I just picked up a British infantry company last week. There is a promotion right now where if you have the old rulebook they will stamp it and give you a free new one. I bought the old one last year for a dollar, so I figured what the hell, why not? Incidentally, the force lists are like codexes, you have to get them separately. A few lists are available on FOW's site, so I am going Scottish for the moment, as the 15th and 51st Scottish Divs are one of the online lists. I think I will name mine the Queen's Own Royal Strathspeys (after a fictional regiment in a novel series I read once). Also played a game last week, or more correctly, watched one. Germans vs. Soviets, 2 on 2. The Soviets had humongous KV supertanks that looked out of scale but weren't. I had control of the German infantry and an artillery spotter, my partner had a fast recon contingent. He spent the game racing around the board slaughtering Russians while my companies sat tight in their buildings guarding the objectives, apparently doing nothing, and scoring no hits with the supporting artillery.

Thanks mate. I see you can have aircraft and seen as I'm ex raf, I would like to have a few spitfires and hurricanes, but can only find the latter. How do they work in game. I take it they are fielded in squadrons and are really a support unit, rather than basing a army on air power?

if i recall correctly, you have to roll for them to come on,if they do they make a pass at a chosen target and dissapear again. I think i saw that in an online battle report.

Yeah it would be pritty epic, but maybe size of table to model scale would make it unrealistic. maybe we can get some clarification on this from someone who plays?

in flames of war, you would only need 1 model of which ever air plane you choose to use instead of the 3 from previous editions, though the not used planes make a good objective.
there is no air combat, you just roll to see if your planes come in to bomb or strafe(need any 5 or 6 on 3D6/sporadic, 5D6/normal, 7D6 superior, the opponent choose to see if he wants to intercept(on any 6's, both players must pay for some sort of pts for planes), each time you use planes for off or def you lose an die down to 1 dice.
then the player see where to aim the plane with a template, making sure not too close to own units, then at the end of the phase you see if the defending player shoot it down with AA before it does damage to the target.

Just looking at the rule book situation vs achtung starter set. Do I need the forces book that comes with the bundle? Whats in it thats worth reading? And I take it the hobby book is just all the tosh about what you can buy and how to paint?
If I don't need then I'll be going to el shop to getting me a starter set, then to my mates to bully, his arse into starting a army for me to destroy ;-)

yes, Actung is the newer version of the starter set, it comes with minis, the rulebook is the smaller but full rulebook that you need, you will then have to decide Early/Mid or Late and get a 'codex', get the hard cover ones, it contain several smaller thin paper back codexes and some additional.

What the hell are the codex books? Are they the campaign books like 'blood guts and glory'. Which would you recommend for a Europe theatre - from d-day to VE day.
Iv been looking at the era of minis, and think I'm going to go with late / mid era. Only problem is which force... British, American, or Germans? Don't fancy the ruskies!

I play germans, so I got "earth and Steel", great all around codex for late german lists, there's a new one covering late eastern front called "grey wolf" for the germans, mid war I recommend "eastern front", though there is several misprints on refering pages etc, they also have awesome ace pre-painted terrain too! www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=79&CategoryID=2488&PageIndex=3

So what would be best for western Europe with the allied forces? I think I'm fancying them and getting my mate to get ze Germans! Are any of the books on the FoW site out of date with v3 rules?

none of the codexes are out of date, the smaller ones are just put together into a bigger book with some additional list and fluff, "turning tide" would be what you want.
