Ave Imperator, fellow generals,
Having recently dug out yet another box of stowaway guardsmen and found they've yet to be more than undercoated, I've come to realise a few things. Notably, that I've painted too many damn guardsmen.
Signs I've found (some may just be delusions):
When you start to evaluate the worth in 'Finishing the fine details on each squad' versus 'How likely this unit is going to be removed on Turn 1.'
When you realise you remember the illustrious history of your veterans as they change units, wargear, and entire paint schemes from edition to edition.
When you remember the individual arms, legs, and heads of your miniatures so well that you retain muscle memory of the necessary brushstrokes, and no longer become hindered by bad lighting or even darkness.
When you find you just chewed through an entire pot of paint basecoating what essentially amounted to a single Troops choice.
Fellow generals, how do you know when you've painted too many damn guardsmen?

The signs above are good, however I find that...
When my books are on the floor and my shelves are full of guardsmen (as I have filled my cases up already): I know I've painted too many guardsmen.
When I have pots of paint in pre-mixed ratios for camo patterning: I know I've painted too many guardsmen.
When I browse internet stores for the cheapest grey primer, as I know I'll need at least 5 cans: I've painted too many guardsmen.
When a large carry case full of models gets taken to the gaming club, and all it has in it is infantry: You're damn right, I've painted too many guardsmen!
Can I get an AMEN?!

You know you've painted too many guardsmen when
Your friends sit in the wrong place and leave an hour later lightly drybrushed and with silver highlights...

You know you've painted too many guardsmen when...
you start incorporating/buying multiple Ministorum Priests just to break up the paint factory line.
It is at this post stage I feel that I should bring up - Can you really ever paint too many guardsmen?!

You know you've painted to many when you start thinking... It would be more efficient for my commander to just arm one in evry two and give the other ones a clip of ammo!

When you sit down and think 'Have I painted too many guardsmen?' In case anyone is wondering, the answer is no.

I know i've painted too many damn guardsmen (which is actually impossible. the Emperor's war machine must be constantly growing. The Emperor protects *signs the Aquila*) when... you're naturally artistic, and cannot think of anymore paint schemes to try out when you are actually considering playing a chaos-themed Guard army just for a change of pace when you pull a stint with Space Marines (I am sorry bretheren...I have failed thee) when you'd rather poke your eye out with a FORK than paint one more god damn Guardsman

You know you've painted too many guardsmen when... you start incorporating/buying multiple Ministorum Priests just to break up the paint factory line. I have a full squad of ratlings and ogryns painted up because of this reason. I haven't used either since halfway through last edition, but they still got a paintjob between platoons. It is at this post stage I feel that I should bring up - Can you really ever paint too many guardsmen?! Never. I just consider this batch endurance training for the next codex where they'll inevitably get even cheaper.

You know you've painted too many Guardsman when..
You could increase your army by 33% if you could just find a way to melt and mold all the plastic from the left over bitz.
You can create whole platoons based on arm/leg positioning.

when you start buying forgeworld for more of a challenge and the cost means you buy less so paint less over a longer period

When you've made every single wargear option available for any PCS / CCS requirement in a 2k game.
When you switch to orks and suddenly realise that GW can actually make good kits with arms that fit more than 1 torso and also give you a bucket load of cool spares to go with them!
When you blunt yet another set of pliers chopping up sprues.
When you know that each coat takes 6 minutes per model per colour and then calculate the rest of the day to fit multiples of 6 minutes.

You know when you've painted too many guardsmen when:
you reach into your case of unpainted guardsmen, and their are no more guardsmen to paint o_0
