Hey guys, im planning to make scenery for the first time and im in need of some tips, heres my plan. Make a frame with cheap wood like bolser or something 1cm/1cm, wrap the parts i want to be solid with a fine mesh which can be manipulated for huge dents in walls etc, then go over the mesh with thick polyfiller... Then paint Has anyone else done this? Will it even work? Is there an easier way (or cheaper)? I was thinking about using styrofoam packaging stuff whatever its called, but that stuff breaks too easy.

That's a very lengthy and messy process. It all depends on what you're planning to make though? Just buildings?

Most people use foam card, and then texture it using filler or something. But you can basically use whatever you want, as long as it looks good in the end that's all that matters

Foam card? Doesnt sound durable... I want something to survive an accidental encounter with toddlers.

Foam card has foam in the middle and card on the outside, its surprisingly strong, cheap and light. You can't sit on it like you could with MDF though I'd leave off the mesh and get a dremel in for holes etc, otherwise it'll be rather heavy. MDF and filler will definately give you something that is bomb-proof and interesting. Textured spray could give you a nice effect without the weight too, and would be much quicker to apply/dry. Failing that, plasticard is fantastic, if a little pricey. It's totally your call though, as you know how much time, money etc you can sink into your project, and how durable/aestheticly pleasing you want the results to be. Make sure you post lots of pictures though, you know we looooove spying on eachothers projects!

Ah cool, il look into foamcard then. I will likely try both in time and decide which is the best, my version is the cost effective one as i have LOTS of filler left over from when i was patching up my flat (about £20 worth of the premix stuff) and i found some mesh stupidly cheap on ebay so it would just be the wood which i could likely find or get cheap, not sure how it would cope with the weight on it mind.
Well when i get some materials and free time i shal update this. (Still waiting on a batch of paint to come so i can paint an entire squad :eyeroll: )

There are a few threads here in the painting and conversions section that go in to detail about scenery making. You should check those out for inspiration/ideas
