I was wondering how you would go about magnetizing imperial guard infantry so they can take different weapons, heavy weapons squads so they can also change weapons, and chimeras so they can also change weapons.

Infantry?! Are you mad!? I take it you mean special weapons? If so, get some 1mmx1mm magnets, drill a hole in the 'hand holding stock' lasgun arm in the hand, and put a magnet in, secured with superglue. Then cut the handle off the flamer, plasmagun, meltagun, whatever and drill a hole there. If you put a magnet on top of the one in the hand, then add a tiny dot of superglue and push the hole in the weapon, then it will be correctly magnetized. If you do one correctly, use this to put magnets all the other weapons, then all the other hands. That way, they can all be used on all the models. It takes a while though! Heavy weapons teams need the plastic stub that fits in the stand chopping off. That's where the magnet will go. Put the other in the hole in the stand. Then use the one you've done to do the other parts. As for chimeras, I haven't had one of the new kits, although after doing infantry you'll probably get the idea now: Find where the pieces connect, put magnets in, repeat! I usually get my magnets off ebay, in batches of 50 or so.

I used to do this with my Tyranid models and found that 2mm x 0.5mm magnets worked fine for plastic models. Simply mount one magnet in the shoulder socket and then cut the ball joint off the arm and attach another magnet in its place. Just make sure that the poles of the magnets are the correct way around before you glue them to the arms; having a couple of spare models for experimenting would be good before you try it on your main models. Which reminds me, I need to magnetise the arms in my Death Korps of Krieg Models today - daunting!
