So, Flyers are in, and have differing rules to Hovering.
The flyer rules mean I might actually use the door gunners I built for my valkyries! (may shoot 4 weapons at normal BS).
Grav Chute Insertion seems a bit more viable too...
I'm not sure if flyer's / Hover'ers' coming in from reserve must be zooming though?

Grav Chute is more viable because flyers can move a really long way... meaning anything jumping out the back can land pretty much anywhere you want.
Grav Chute might also get round the rules peculiarity (I'm still not totally sure of this) that seems to make anything with the flyer rule that comes on from reserve move at high speed... so no coming in as a fast skimmer / hover mode.. thus making normal disembarkation impossible in the first turn the flyer is on the table (if it came from rserve).
with the above.. please read and check, I'm not convinced I've got it right.
-- Edit -- I think this is only the case when flyers leave combat airspace and then return.. Hover'ers can be fast skimmers, so could opt to enter using these rules instead.
--Edit complete --
Flyers / Hover'ers do get 'Jink' which is a cover save, but at the cost of accuracy in thier next round of shooting. Flyers are also 'hard to hit' so need snap shots (6's) to hit in the first place.

On the subject of disembarking from a flyer/skimmer, the new BRB states that a unit cannot voluntarily disembark from a vehicle if it has travelled more than 6" in its movement phase; does the Grav Chute Insertion rule circumvent this? If we want a unit to disembark from a Valkyrie normally, will it have to switch to Hover mode for that movement phase to allow this?

The way it appears, you must deploy fliers in reserve, but can choose if they enter play in Zoom or Hover mode (assuming they have Hover type, which we do). While Zooming, passengers cannot disembark.
Grav Chute insertion isn't errata'd extensively, so it looks like this is the procedure for Jump troops: Move onto the board in Hover mode (because Valks are scouts they have outflank, or can just deepstrike), Move 12" in move phase. In Shooting, move flat out 18" and follow the Grav chute instructions. This unit then gets to shoot immediately, as it is in the shooting phase that you go flat out.
That's my read through of that, I have the book and the guard FAQ, if anyone has a different interpretation, go for it.

So whats the main difference between Zoom and Hover? It sounds like the Valk/Ven are more versatile in the 6th ed...right?

When you Zoom, your combat speed is 18" cruising 36", but you have to move at least 18" and can only do a single 90 degree turn. Can move flat out in the shooting phase 12-24".
can fire 4 weapons at full BS, and any shot fired at it must be snap shots (unless they are skyfire shots). Zooming fliers can evade after shots hit but before penetration, which gives them a Jink save, but they can only fire snap shots next turn. Also, they can choose whether to have the Skyfire rule each turn.
If they leave the board while moving or going flat out they enter ongoing reserves and can come back in but must do so in Zoom mode.
Also, if theya re immobilized while zooming their velocity gets locked and they cant slow down or change modes, cant move flat out and cant Jink. If it is wrecked or explodes to crashes, large template 2d6" scatter str 10 hit no saves to mdels under, as well as transported models. survivors are disembarked beside the wreckage.

Me and Empty discovered today that ALL flyers start in reserve, and that hover'ers are not fast skimmers, they are flyers that act like fast skimmers - so must be kept in reserve.
Also.... SgtSamvimes - it is important to note that the strength of the explosion when a vehicle crash lands is 6 AP -, while for the occupants it is S10 AP 1. Which makes quite a difference.. and my heart sank for my poor blitza bommer suicide diver I had planned.

So is Air Cav still a deadly force here in the 6th Ed? Because the way it looks we got a little bit of a henderance with not being able to put everyone in reserve and we can't assault after disembarking....?

We never could assault after disembarking, even in 5th Ed. So no changer really there With having to deploy 50% or more the Air Cav did get nerfed, but imagine how broken it would be if we could bring on multiple zooming Valkyries/Vendettas in our first turn! The idea of 3 or 4 Valkyrie/Vendettas now rocking up should be enough to reduce most opponents to gibbering wrecks...... Also remember that flyers get to use there full BS when zooming......its a shame we cant pack Pask into a Vendetta x3 T/L Lascannons FTW!!

Remember too that the 50% you can have in reserve doesn't count units that MUST start in reserve. so the Valks are auto reserve, plus 50%.
Throw down some MSU platoonsmen to hold the line, and maybe a vet squad with forward sentires in cover with a lascannon. The Valks come screaming in whenever, strafe the field and fly to the other side, next turn Hover, drop vets or flat out grav chutes, then back to zooming.
Gives an opportunity to destroy any AA guns with troop hvy weapons before the air support arrives.

Hovering just seems like an easy way for non-AA guns to take out my beloved valks/vends :/ I suppose grav-chute is always an option that I shouldn't be scared of.

Hovering will have its risks, but it can really depend on who/what your playing
I'm planning on running a pair of Vendettas with no troops inside purely to cause havoc.
The Vendetta will punish most other armies, and should also nerf those dam pesky Necron flyers

The Grav-Chutes are actually viable since you get your armor save now for dangerous terrain tests, and everyone I have faced so far hates the valks / ven's *shrug*
