Empty V Tread 1250 6th ed
Mission: Objectives:
Oks place them in boulders and northern ruins
Guard place them in Bunker and Tower
We played these games quite a while ago, so I can't remember the details - which makes it a more fluid and narrative description.
- Game designers note : We were lucky enough to be able to set my apocalypse table, so had an area of 8' by 6' wide to play across. I wanted to see how tactics might change and whether transports would become more useful. It hadn't occurred to me but it would mean weapon range would be more important too, and thus area denial and manoeuvring would become more of a feature. -
Waag'un Slagga had enough of beating up other green skins, and had seen too many of his favourite lads get cut down in massive brawls... and the rumours that some 'Umies had landed and were trying to take the old bunker complex meant he finally had some propa fightin to look forward to.
Colonel M. Teyat ..(I can edit this for you later if you can give me your commanders real name)..Had been sent transmissions of a growing Ork presence on Beta Centuia Seven, While the Xenos scum seemed happy to engage in conflict amongst themselves fears were growing that a strong leader would eventually rise and unite the greenskins. The Xenos were also operating in a previously Imperial held sector and there was precious intel to be reclaimed from the old comms stations which would give clues to the old munitions and fuel reserves which had been stored deep underground.
The rumble of heavy tanks was clearly audible to both sides, and each force approached the old complex cautiously, The Xenos tucked into the cover of ruins and boulders and sat waiting in ambush for the Guard to arrive (unfortunately, the large plumes of filthy black smoke and massive Waargh banners made this near impossible to achieve).
Colonel M Teyat ordered his armoured units to spread out, with a Leman Russ Battletank creeping round Southern (lower) flank overlooking the field of tank traps
Colonel M Teyat also commanded his Heavy Weapon Squad to claim the high ground in the ruins on the Northern (top) flank.
Ironically this put them directly opposite Marg Tuggitz and his Big Shoota, who chuckled and waited impatiently fer the orda to commence firin' at da 'umies.
His temper wore thin and no longer to hold back Marg tuggitz opened up with his Shoota, spraying bullets all over the place, clattering off the ruins and ricochetting all around the Guardsmen who were dug in. Not one single bullet came anywhere near them and they afforded themselves a little chuckle of contempt.
Alas, Marg had started a chain reation and while Waag'un Slaaga screamed at his ladz to hold fire nothing could stop the ambush from revealing itself now... the Boyz in the Boom gunz all eagerly fired of their Boom shells and laughed as they saw dirt and dust blown high into the air.. unfortunately, after the smoke cleared they realised they had missed their targets completely and could see various turrets rotating toward them.
Amidst the explosions and gunfire, M Teyat pushed his men forward, sneaking round the perimeters of the old Bunker and toward the comms tower, He signalled to his armoured support to take down the Xenos armour which were defiling the machine spirits of old Imperial tanks. Ironically the Imperial aim was as poor as the Xenos and a number of vehicles found themselves out of range
Waag'un Slaaga smiled and looked to the south, he could see a familiar sight cutting low across the horizon and chuckled as its supa-shootas opened up on the 'Umie tanks which were stuck out on the the flank.
Meanwhile the Boom gunz continued to fire.. as did Marg with his Big Shoota, though it was a lucky Boom shell that gave the Orks in the Northern ruins a reason to cheer:
Waag'un kept having to beat skulls and smash mouths in order to keep his ladz from sprinting off toward the 'Umies they could see creeping round the edge of the bunker.
Colonel M Teyat persisted with his advance, slowly bringing up the Hell Hound toward the outcrop of boulders behind which he could see large Xenos and what appeared to be some kind of banner or symbol of rank. Continuing the large scale suppressing fire the Imperial forces were slowly securing the foothold they needed.
Irritatingly, anotherof his chimera units was taken down by an unexpected threat – a Xenos aircraft had just appeared and seemed to be surprisingly accurate... and squinting into the distance.. was that a second one he could see.
Quickly he Voxed to his Sentinel pilot yet he realised it was too late as all he could hear was the staccato of gunshot and a wheezing guttural rumble of the pilots death exhalation.
Things were no longer looking so hopeful for the Colonel, most of his mechanised units were stranded among wreckage and looking across open no-mans land at Xenos cannon.. though looking round the edge of the Bunker he could spot his two saving graces, the Leman Russ Demolisher 'Old Faithfull' and the Hellhound 'Gift of Promethius' had come into range of the Xenos command position.
He could also count on his Autocannon teams to continue suppressing the Xenos into cover, while they weren't racking up kills, they were certainly excellent at keeping the Xenos scum suppressed.
With a buzz of static Colonel M Teyat was startled by his Vox coming to life “Sentinel Pilot Beta in position, commencing fire”.. it appeared that only one sentinel had been taken down by the Xenos Aircraft, the second sentinel had taken a different approach and seemed like it would pay off.
He was further relieved when the Leman Russ Battletank 'Iron Maiden' finally scored a hit on the Looted Russ tucked within the boulders.
Yet despite his efforts, the Aircraft which had come in were cutting through his armour like a Power Sword through the Faithless,
With a great Roaring Cheer Waag'un called forth his Ladz which had been lurking in the distant debris, sending his secund in command to meet dem he charged forward with the rest of his Nobz and out into the sights of the big flamey tank.. and was very 'appy to see it explode in front of him as they crossed the distance toward the puny 'umies.
He was further rewarded fer his heroics as the Big Shooty tank took a direct hit to the turret and plumes of smoke started pouring out from within.
Colonel M Teyat made a quick appraisal and having activated the comms tower and gained the tech servitor ArtuD.2 from within the Bunker he gave the order to fall back cursing the Xenos for the damage they had caused to his proud armour.
Waag'un Slaaga stopped running afta a bit and stood looking at the debris and wreckage around him.. and at his clean lookin' Big Choppa... “Dats why fightin' dem 'umies is crap – dey runs away before ya get yer toolz dirty.. might 'av to go an pick a fight on dem Dread boyz again”
.. as he turned he noticed something gleaming in the sunshine... a weird techy lookin fing was layin' in the dirt and was scrollin' a map of some tunnelz via a projecta beam ..
“maybe da fight ain't over yet he chuckled... looks light dey might be back fer dis”
.. an hour after returning to base camp, Colonel M Teyat requested the technicl servitor be brought before him.. .. anonther hour later the message returned that signals which data-linked to the servitor were pinging back on auspex from the battlefield they had just left.. and that the two guardsmen who had been accompanying the servitor had failed to report in.
Looking at the wider scan on Auspex he could see more Xenos were heading toward the Bunker Complex, “looks like they're anticipating our return Sir” said Orderly Jonas, “I estimate they'll be there in 5 or 6 hours sir”
“Right men... restock, repair and reinforce... we move out in 4 hours” voxed Colonel M Teyat to his men. “This time we do it properly”
