I was looking at all the new Shiny Chaos things just now, and I realised that Khorne Beserkers, Plague Marines, Noise Marines and Thousand Sons are all now Elites not Troops. This has now pissed me off. I was happy to see that Chaos Marines were now becoming more individual, and moving away from being just another Chapter of SM's. But no... GW don't like this and have made it so they are in theory, Ultramarines that have become Gothic Looking. Screw you GW, you always have to ruin my fun -.-

Weren't they elite and stuff back in third? I admit that I really liked that the cult marines were troops in the last codex but wasn't the elite section in that quite weak? Now with 6th you can get six elites at 2000 points so you can still get a nice supply of cult troops.
I haven't read the new codex yet but I have been looking at the old one recently and rubbing my tenticles together over the fact that you could have an allied chaos force with just a bunch of plague marines and a deamon prince (or sorceror). Which I had been thinking about adding into my Ork army.
What are the troop choices now anyway CSM squads and cultists? Do you get plague marines etc as troops with the right H.Q choice?

I'm not sure.... Not too happy at paying out £30 for a bleeding Codex eitherin all fairness. Whe I get the new dex I will answer that one. I'm tempted to do my Traitor Guard Allies but also a Nurgle Daemon Army as allies aswell, so I can differ my allies game to game.

A Chaos Lord with the appropriate Mark is supposed to unlock that Cult Unit as a Troops Choice. So if you want Troops Berzerkers, take a Chaos Lord with Mark of Khorne and you're sorted.
I personally am not very happy about the pic I saw of the basic CSM squad's options. Unless there's something in the Marks/Icons/Champion options that I'm not seeing, they've really done nothing to fix the core weakness of the Dex: Everything costs too much for what it does.
I'm worried we're going to end up with another Dex with a couple of more or less workable gimmicky builds, but nothing feasible that even remotely resembles a Chaos Army as it's always been portrayed in the Fluff.

Unlockable cult troops works for me. To be honest though, good or bad I'll pick up a copy of the dex sooner or later. The models I have are too delicious to leave unpainted and it would make me sad to paint them up nicely and then never put them on the tabletop

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm going to be pulling out my Chaos Marines and giving them some table time again. Chaos was what got me into 40K, and even tho they haven't seen much table time these past five years, I still consider myself to be a Chaos Player. It's just that there were some things in the rumours as recently as a week or so ago that would have made things so much better. Simple things, like being able to take extra Special Weapons in CSM Squads at 15 and 20 dudes. Heavy/Special Weapon pricing on par with the other Marine Dexes. 13 Point Chaos Marines with Bolter/Pistol/CCW. I mean seriously, Phil, look at Grey Hunters here. You really think a single point of Ld is a reasonable trade for ATSKNF AND Counter-Attack? WTF? There was a statement somewhere that the soon to be outdated CSM Dex was the result of limitations imposed by various outside factors, and the new one is going to be the Dex that Gav would have written if he could. I'm starting to fear that's actually true

That seems like a reasonable list of concerns. I'm sort of suprised that it doesn't have a bunch of decent tricks and flex to it though. Codex creep, where art thou?

*Looks in Mirror* Hookah, Hookah..... Hookah *Turns light off and waits 10 seconds before putting them back on* *Dave's wallet and one of his kidneys are now missing, and there's a syringe inserted in his arm* I'm not sure how to feel about the new Chaos rumors. One one hand I think the Dragon and Daemon Engines are stupid looking, and will not be including them. However, if we can still unlock Cult Marines as troops by taking a Lord with the proper mark, then I won't be too upset. Definitely not sure how I'm feeling about the new codex being hardcover though, but I'm tending towards not liking it.

I'm okay with hardcover as long as it isn't too tall for my bookshelf like the Apoc and FW books.

Well the fantasy army books aren't as big as IA books or the apocalypse rulebook.
£30?
Plus they've said model releases and codex releases may not be simultaneous from now on. I wonder how cheap conscripts will get when the guard get a hardcover 6th edition codex? In the far future, that is..

By the time the Guard get a hardback book, it'll be at least 7th ed and codices will probably cost more than the rulebook. Got my copy of the CSM codex today as I'm a CSM player and at least until today, I liked to own a copy of every codex. Sadly that policy has now gone the way of the Dodo.
