i imagine that because wayland has brought them out, and considering maelstroms location, they will trade using the wayland name... i imagine that not much will change... good move from wayland i think... hopefully everyone who maelstrom owes money too will be re-funded or will recive their orders without problems... well it sounds like that to me anyway.

Well, the short version, based on statements by the companies concerned, is:
Maelstrom racked up over £500k of trade debts (as at their last set of accounts) and anecdotally closer to £750k by the time they ceased trading. The majority of this will have been owed to miniatures companies.
Wayland Games offered to buy Maelstrom Games, but were refused. In the meantime, the owner of Maelstrom set up some other companies and split the business between them (Eye of the Storm, Maunsfield Games and Mierce Miniatures) and Maelstrom.
Simple Miniatures Games were owed the best part of £100k, which Maelstrom had agreed a repayment schedule but the payments were being bounced. They sold the debt (presumably at a deep discount) to Wayland, who called in the debt. Maelstrom couldn't pay, therefore they have ceased trading and are insolvent.
Wayland HAVEN'T bought Maelstrom. They offered a while back, but it didn't happen.
Maelstrom will go into liquidation, owing a considerable sum to their traders (that is, to other miniature manufacturers). The owner of Maelstrom has set up other companies, and all the bits that were profitable have ended up in there, leaving all the losses in Maelstrom.
Nobody is likely to get anything from Maelstrom - the company is insolvent. If you have ordered from them and not had the goods, go to PayPal and your credit card company and get them to do a chargeback.
--------------------------------------
Personally, I will never buy anything from any company that Rob Lane, owner of Maelstrom, is involved in. Wayland have done the right thing (for a mix of reasons) in bringing down Maelstrom; without their actions this could have gone on for another couple of months and potentially taken down several other traders.

Mismanagement by Rob Lane? Or malicious intent?

The majority of this will have been owed to miniatures companies. This is actually pretty significant news. I mean 3 quarters of a mil in debt to mini companies.. I wonder how much they owed GW. Man! We get hit with price rises at the best of times; hopefully there won't be any compensatory price rises :/

Ive always wondered how these discounted stores make money on mini's especially GW's when they are 20% off. I don't know what the markup actually is but i would be surprised if the independants were getting a 40% markup with the standard recommended retail prices. Either way though if your selling enough mini's then 20% should be more than enough to keep you in the black just not at a huge profit.
I would love it if they had 500k of in store display armies just sitting on the shelves lol

So this is why they had all their recent sales, I feel somewhat bad now for buying stuff at 80% off from them now, but I suppose every little helped them...

Over on Dakka Dakka there's a thread going back to the end of July, where people were already speculating about Maelstrom's problems: www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/464643.pageGenerally I'm not a fan of companies that undercut others, creating a very cut-throat marketplace. It makes everyone else's life miserable. Actually I'm turning into a hardcore Trade Unionist in my old age.. *Hides red hammer & sickle underpants.*

To be honest i do use the discount online stores for bulk orders, for odd box sets paints , glue etc i use my local GW. people do complain about GW's prices but logically you can assume that these prices are optimal because people would have stopped buying the products otherwise. They rely on people buying premium products because in terms of quality GW's range is a premium range. You get what you pay for. + back in the day when i could get 15 guardsman metals for £15 there was no extra options in the box just 15 figures and 15 bases, the amount of customisation and wargear etc in each pack has improved considerable now ive come back to the hobby. The only thing that annoys me with guard now is they removed all the dozer blades etc from the tank packs and now charge for an extra pack.

there not top of the range products. their multi-part kits are the best for making unique forces but they aren't the best, brushes and paints can get better for a lot less from craft shops.

I've always found my GW brushes to be pretty decent and that they get the job done. I've never had one fall apart after a few hours but I have noticed heavy wear after painting hundreds of models.
To be honest I haven't ever bothered to shop around for other brushes because I find these good enough.

I like the Army Painter ones. At least you can chew on them for a while without them splintering.

I've had no problem with GW brushes not lasting, although it's a good idea to check the brush before buying it - I have bought one or two that were in a terrible state. Art shops also have a huge selection of brushes, although in my area they're either the same price as GW ones, or a bit more. But art shops have a better selection of sizes; and have 0000 brushes too.

i tend to use the fine detail and detail brushes, found their brisles tend to fallout and snap while painting after a while. now there's just a tiny sliver or brush left on mine.

Yeah that's the finest, then 000, which is the same as a GW fine detail. i tend to use the fine detail and detail brushes, found their brisles tend to fallout and snap while painting after a while. now there's just a tiny sliver or brush left on mine. But are you cleaning your brushes gently, yet properly after each use, carefully removing leftover paint residue with water and a tissue? Also not dunking the silver bit, only the bristles, into paint helps preserve them longer.

I loved Malestrom Games place, they held many Tempus Fugitive events, i'll be sad to see it go.

I used to buy stuff from Maelstrom, they were a decent outfit, shipping worldwide. Guess GW bringing down the hammer on their foreign trading (selling stuff at less than GW prices in Aus to people via the UK) killed their market niché.

i'll be sad to see it go. Is there any confirmation that it will go? The gaming centre was a seperate company from the mail order one, according to rumour.
