cheminhaler : I think you'll find that people in 3rd world countries, who are surrounded by poverty, crime and disease... hardship. Having to grow their own food, living in hutts, etc... are actually the most optimist people you'll meet. For us evil is uncommon and so we watch it on the news and feel cosy and safe at home. For them it's quite the opposite. If you want hardship and evil, all you have to do is walk down the street or watch as it comes through your front doors.

I said NEWS REPORTS, not PEOPLE.
But yeah, in Former Soviet Republic of Hetland, news readers throw grenades at you.

Over in SA the reports were just as delightful: Murder...rape...murder...rape...government corruptions...unemployment up...interest rates up...inflation up...some more rape....27 killed in motorway accident... The news reports in Lagos are even more hellish. And let's not even go into Kandahar...

If the news didnt make such a big deal over the shooter and focused more on the victims we would : Deny any future killers the chance to become infamous and notorious. Generate more awareness over exactly what the taking of a life enrolls.

Yes, but unfortunately victims are not, by their nature, memorable. Normality does not sell newspapers, and normal people do not murder dozens of their fellow humans for no discernible reason.

Normality does not sell newspapers Which does not make for a bad argument against a for-profit news industry.

Normality does not sell newspapers Which does not make for a bad argument against a for-profit news industry. Just because it produces an externality you don't like doesn't make it a credible argument to wipe out million's of people's livelihoods.
