Just a quick questions about making terrain.
So, what does everyone mount scenery pieces on? I thought card but then I'm worried about warping, then I thought plasti card, but that can be quite expensive! So my next thought was wood but that could be too thick...
The scenery I plan on making is going to be open battlefield style (craters etc), and buildings on streets.
The street pieces would include one building and a path, with the road marked by black or gray paper.

you could avoid bases all together depending on the structure. that is unless it is for example a simgle wall etc. i used foam backing board to build an 8x4 ft city scape lol for now ive joined the pieces with bits of cocktail sticks but eventually ill borrow a glue gun and stick them proper.

Mines built straight on to my board but you could use old CDs.

4mm MDF board 4mm mulitplex / plywood the material used for orange and or mandarin boxes several layers of card board glued on top of each other with PVA (corn flake boxes) hardboard (the board used in the back of Ikea Wardrobes) basically everything and all materials not too thick, lets say around 1mm to 4mm... look around in your own environment and I am sure you will find something.
OOOHHHH and not to forget the wooden boxes of the Christmas gift Wine bottles

i've used mdf on my buildings, but than later on removed the base since it ment even the lower ground was treated as difficult terrain

I've found cheap grey posterboard (I think that's what it's called) works, but you have to seal it with PVA first or it will warp. Most terrain can be built without a base however, and looks much better for it!

B&Q is your friend for a board, loft insulation sheets for £11. 4 in a pack and they make a 6' x 4' board. That's what I use for the basis of mine.
For a small fee I will make some for you.

I use MDF - 3mm for smaller pieces and 6mm for the rest. Doesn't have a grain, so it stays flat when you build, glue and paint onto it.
