I've been reading the numerous posts and guides for regimental designs and was hoping someone with extensive knowledge of the 41st milennium could help me create an IG regiment and homeworld based on the african continent.
I mean what type of world would Africa be? What type of soldiers / regiment would it field. I know the continent is extremely diverse geographically but I'm open to all ideas.
I'd love to see what kind of fluff RedsandRoyals or aeonian could provide.
Like I said all help is more than welcome.

If you're going for an agri world theme, maybe each town or village could be ruled over by tribal elders, much like it is in many parts of West Africa. Actually I saw some kind of film the other day on an African channel, where some poor guy and his wife were dragged out publically and executed in front of the entire community, probably for witchcraft. Maybe all psykers have to keep their talents very well hidden.
Government?
Strong central government or a weak government trying to impose Imperial ideals on an unwilling population?

As far as regiments go, I would imagine African themed Guard to be light infantry/recon based, perhaps with some mobile light artillery. Although an 'African' themed planet would not be as technologically advanced as other Imperial worlds, on't forget that the munitorum issues extra equipment to Guard regiments, so there is a precedent for a few armoured units with Leman Russes. However I feel that the PDF such that it is would not have access to such equipment, and would instead use their own inferior model.
As for the planet, I imagine a world that for the most part is not very densely populated, but with several large cities dotted around, perhaps in an industrial belt. Agriculture and herding would be a major part of local economy, as well as mining for various ores and minerals that would go into the planets tithe.
A tribal/clan system would be clear, and away from the reach of the Imperial Govenor's forces small scale wars between tribes could be reasonably common. Depending on your preference, troops from the Guard could be drawn either from the PDF, or conscripted from the tribal peoples, who would already have no little skill in conducting hit and run warfare, hence the light infantry nature of the regiments that are raised. It could be that each clan is forced to raise a regiment of their own every how many years, or the conscripts could just be forced to set aside their differences and fight together. Persoanlly I prefer the latter.

Depend if you want to base your army on the stereotypical warlords that you would have / may still habe found in the 90s, or government forces.
For warlord forces, I would imagin lots of low cost troops with a few portable heavy weapons; notably missile launchers, and auto cannons or heavy bolters. Then backed up by fast armour like hellhounds.
For government forces, I guess roughly the same with a few differences. Maybe transports for troops, and some basic heavy support.
In a but shell: I'd see both be based on high number of low skill troops (conscripts) with a few experienced fighters too (basic infantry, maybe one squad of vets). I would expect fast low armour support as well.

Interesting stuff, so would a blend of predominantly hybrid Catachan / Cadian models suffice ?

Yeah...light infantry would be a must. Autoguns would give a great feel as well. I would check into Dkok style of heavy weapons, they would give the army a hand-me-down equipment feel to it. If you want mech type army chimeras and sentinels would be a proper fit. Think about what your stance would be on energy weapons, they may not be as prevalent in this type of army.
Good luck!

Exactly
PROS - Sniper and Flamer weaponry? DKOK Thumper style Grenade Launchers - Regular Infantry carry Machetes instead of bayonets - Jungle Warfare Specialists rivals of Catachan (animosity, enmity?) - Chimera APCs and Hellhounds, perhaps Griffons? - Light Infantry with Autoguns = DEFINATELY! - Loose platoon structure - Veteran Squads (Let's be realistic several African nations boast veterans that have been fighting since the age of 7 - 8 years old) - Guerilla Warfare specialists - Dictatorship government - Agri World with a history of civil war over natural resources - Numerous tribes conscripted into a single regiment
CONS - No Plasma Weaponry - Lack of Leman Russ?

'Making do' with standard GL's and Flamers would be awesome. A complete or near complete lack of melta and plasma would be a very bold fluff motivated move and a cool one to play on. Autocannons etc and light vehicles.
Pictures when it happens. Please.

Maybe it would be more practicable to have then as allies, rather than their own entity?

I don't see why older types of deathstrike missile couldn't be mothballed to this world. Techpriests could be rare, but still exist, so you could restrict your army to just having one.
Primaris psyker : why not? He could be trained by the Schola Psykana and resent to the regiment with the psychic circuitry. It could be an interesting conversion opportunity.

Yeah I was tempted by a kind of Shamanic Voodoo style Primaris Psyker witch doctor but I reckon I'll justs tick with a standard Colonel.
I'd like to remain true to fluff as this force will not be made for competitivie games but more as a legacy to a continent I respect

Trucks would make good rebel sentinels but I'm aiming for a more conventional force based on the African Union

Highly advanced South African kit is not really in keeping with the theme of low-tech light troops.

Yes and no, I mean I think in the 41st milennium Autoguns would be more accesible via the black markets, etc... I just see them as the equivalent of AKs today. Easy to access, reliable assault rifles
