Well, I know I'm not the only member who was excited for this game....
But it's a let down
And here's why...
1- The controls, as a default, are god awful. I've had to customise a wide range of them to make them more inline with the 'usual' FPS shooters. For a start, your torch is turned on and off using G.........why?! Every other game I've played uses F or T for the torch (flashlight if you're from across the pond).
F, is your secondary fire button, which is just stupid because F is instinctually the torch as I have just said. Numerous times I have killed myself because I try to turn on the torch, and instead launch and poxy underslung grenade.
V is your meleè button.....again....this is just stupid. You try and reach for it but because its an odd key that is rarely used in FPS you have no clue and your timing is off. So numerous times you die from a flurry of claws.
I spent a good 5 mins changing the key bindings to make them more in line with what man of us would be used to. This is just unnecessary and could have been avoided.
2- The AI is terrible. Your fellow Marines very rarely actually follow you, instead, they get stuck in one place and just stand there. And it appears that the developers are aware of this, because in many instances of losing my computer partners, they suddenly teleport in beside you in a blinding blue flash.....again....awful.
The Aliens however, aren't bad. They could be a lot better but they're not terrible. They do have their moments however, such as sitting on a stairwell. I was creeping behind a computer console, and an alien was crouching in a doorway at the top of some stairs. I decided to shoot it........and it did nothing. It didn't run, it didn't make a noise, it didn't retaliate. I just killed it after a short burst of the pulse rifle. This has happened numerous times, despite clearly standing in front of them, they don't attack you. Having said that, when they do attack you, they are fun enemies, constantly crawling around the ceilings and environment.
3- The faces of the characters are as still and emotionless as a fish'. They hardly move and the mouths stay pretty much shut when they're talking, even in cut scenes.
4- There was only been one memorable moment in the campaign, and I've been playing it for a good 3 hours now. One thing the developers did get right was a small ambush in a hangar. A broken pipe was venting lots of steam, so visibility was poor. Then some hazy shapes walk through the steam, and carnage ensues as you shoot anything that moves in the steam. Again though, this is the only memorable part so far, the rest is just your bog standard fire fights and not much else happens.
5- Some simple errors that in this day and age, should not belong in a game such as this. Too many to list here properly, but lets just say that Space Marine felt more realistic than Colonial Marines does.
I'm ranting now, but it's definitely a let down. I'm not saying don't buy it, it will keep you entertained. But for a game that many waited for, I think we should keep waiting for that truly amazing Aliens game that this was supposed to be.
Now that I've spent a few hours on it, it's getting better, but only because I changed lots of the settings and getting used to it. It's and ok game, not great, but ok.
