Just thought I would add some fluff that I wrote for an upcoming tournament, I don't normally do this kinda stuff, but the missus said it was good (which is something special as she can't stand most of the hobby!)
Anyhow........
+++The Hunt+++
+++Imperial Navy, Endeavour Class Cruiser Shield of Tymus+++
Company Commander Cariticus shook his head, the emergency beacon signals were still very faint and seemed to be getting fainter. He wondered how long they would last. He had been tasked to find the source of the signal for 6 months. The voyage across the Tymus sector had turned into a desperate race to find the beacon. Darker forces had been reported on the fringe of the system and that worried him, the Tymus system was a mining and resource hub, exporting high grade materials to the nearby Ryza Forgeworld and beyond. The High Lords of Terra kept a large Standing Army in the system, but that was a long way away now and with just the 114th Tymus Division’s Battle Force Gamma on its own on board the Cruiser Shield of Tymus he felt quite vulnerable. Well he would have if it wasn’t for what allies that had joined him on the hunt. Canis Wolfborn and a small detachment of Space Wolves had been with them since they had left their home world of Tymus Prime 6 months ago. He still remembered that day clearly, Canis standing quietly in the Planetary Governor’s offices along with his immediate superiors and that of the Space Wolves while he was briefed on the mission. A long range scanner had picked up a signal from a drop pod, originating from the long missing Space Wolves 13th Company, on the distant planet Cerig. Cerig sat on the outer rim of the Tymus system, a cold and desolate planet devoid of natural life but home to a small colony of miners. Lightly defended, contact had been lost just before the beacon had been triggered. The Space Wolves had been notified as soon as the signal was detected, to which they had diverted Canis and a small detachment from a nearby system to help with the retrieval of the drop pod and any possible survivors. CC Cariticus had been assigned to accompany Canis to Cerig and to ensure the planet was still within the Holy Emperor’s territory.
And now just as Cerig had come into view and plans for planet fall were starting, he started getting his first glimpses of the planet and satellite stations surrounding it. Charred hulks of mining transporters floated by the starboard side, empty of life and burnt out superstructures showed signs melta blasts and demolition charges. The nearby satellite transport hub had been blasted out of orbit completely. As the Shield of Tymus got closer he got his first view of the polar station and main transport hub of Cerig, Alpha Vorn. Black smoke was visible from the low orbit they were now in. Infrastructure and hab-blocks could be seen toppled over. All scans had returned no life signs from Alpha Vorn, but they could still get some life signs from outlying areas and mining structures around Cerig.
CC Cariticus and Admiral Tusk signalled to Canis to come over to the holo-map in the centre of the command bridge. Canis approached quietly, a few nearby ensigns quickly averted their eyes as he passed, neither one liked the look of a man who could quite easy snap them in two if they displeased him. Life aboard ship with a man who was a natural hunter had been a constant source of agony for the ship’s crew and Guardsmen, his pack of Fenrisian Wolves were growing more impatient by the day as they longed to be roaming wild lands and stalking some hideous prey. Some had even been unlucky enough to get between the great wolf and his Fenrisian Wolves before being inadvertently tossed aside by an angry howling Wolf. As Canis stood on the opposite side of the holo-map CC Cariticus read him through a list of disturbing discoveries they had found as they approached Cerig. The Space Wolf stared long at the holo-map and nodded when CC Cariticus had finished. The three experienced men held each other with equal respect. CC Cariticus and Admiral Tusk had let the Space Wolves have free roam of the lower decks and cargo holds for the Fenrisian Wolves to have some space to move. CC Cariticus looked to Canis “we’ve located a suitable landing site just here close to Cerig’s main armoury and star-port; it should offer decent protection from the current storms and hostile weather around Alpha Vorn. It should also give us a commanding view of the capital and the western plains region. We’ll make land fall tomorrow and secure the Governor’s office and try to ascertain what happened here first. After we’ve secured the area we shall make our way towards the beacons location which is approximately 150kms to the South of Alpha Vorn”
Canis nodded and slowly lifted his hand and pointed to a spot near to where CC Cariticus had picked “here” he said. It was closer to the mountainous region to the east of the capital; it would offer a better rear-defence and wouldn’t be as exposed as Cariticus’s location. “Day break” he said gruffly at CC Cariticus, and with that he turned and walked slowly out of the bridge and towards the rest of the Space Wolves contingent, the howling started as soon as they saw him, the eve before battle, there was much to do.
CC Cariticus turned to Commissar Walkyre “standard hostile deployment, lasguns with plenty of ammo and rations for two weeks, take two squads of Veterans with full plasma load out and a Chimera. We’ll take B Companies 2nd Platoon for planet fall, and I want two heavy weapon squads with missile launchers and auto-cannons, we still don’t know who or what did this and if they’re still here”
“Yes sir” The Commissar replied sternly “What about armour?”
“Yes, I’ve been giving that some thought, we’ll take a Manticore and a Colossus for any long range engagements, the Manticore’s long range scanners should work well in the hostile environment. Also Admiral Tusk has allowed us to take a Vendetta and Vulture Gunship for recon; we’ll deploy them as soon as we land”
The Commissar nodded, he liked the Manticore, it always lifted the men’s spirits to see such awesome fire power “and for yourself sir?”
“Just my command Chimera, Walkyre, and I’ll take some of the snipers from first company along with their auto-cannon team as well” CC Cariticus replied
“Certainly sir” He turned to CC Cariticus “and Marbo? Did you want me to find him? He’s been skulking around the engine bay for the last 6 months; I think he would come in handy down there”
“I’ll find him” CC Cariticus cautiously replied “I think he’ll like this one….”
I hope you enjoyed it, no doubt I've probably butchered more 40K background history than Matt Ward normally does in a day!
