Ok guys, first squad is up, it's got some goods and some bads, "do´s and don't ´s". I would like to hear what you guys think, this was something totally new to me, even tho I have paint guardsmen before, I've never tried to paint them anymore than pure tabletop quality. I'm mainly a Nid-player and a dipper at that. Myself, I think they look OK, I really like how the fatigues came out and the lenses on those Forgeworld heads look nice. What I don't like however is the winged-skulls and the edge-highlighting in general. So tell me guys, anything you especially like or dislike and you are all very welcome to give any advise or constructive criticism you want! And if you want, check out my brand spanking new painting blogg, which don't contain anything except these pics ATM, but more is coming! lovehateofpaint.blogspot.se/

those flat colors look pretty awesome. I'm a heavy washer but that flat khaki looks very professional. well done!

I think the highlighting on the rifles is a little bright, its too much of a different shade than the rest of the rifle. Also you cant see any details on the boots or fatigue trim, no idea why this is :/ How thick did you apply the paint? Overall its decent quality for tabletop

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to rework the highlighting in general, I also did some silver on the edges to make stuff look worn, but I'm not to happy with the result, looks more like a highlight gone horribly wrong. It would be nice to hear from an experienced Cadian-scheme painter, exactly what paints and techniques they use, since I just made this up as I went, being a first attempt and all. As for the details, I think I went a little heavy on the primer/basecoat, I'm using Armypainters color primer, I do however think I'll try to airbrush the primer on next time, since I just bought one!

If you want the cadian green, you used the wrong ones, they are more toward green yellowish, or green geryish. I personally hate the skull with wings, so I shave them off before painting.
You did a very nice job on the lens. The gloves and boots could use a dark grey highlight. The guardsmen could use accessories like pouches, ammo, grenades, backpacks, knives etc. The basing could enhance your models too once you decide where they are fighting. Hope that helps.

Yeah a thick primer would do that i guess, ive no experience with the army painter primer :/ As to the highlighting you get almost all the paint off your brush then tickle the area you want to highlight... Kinda like you would tickle a rentboys nipple...

I tickle rent boys nipples with razorwire. Whilst they're tied to the radiator and off their faces on Rohypnol.
And by rent boy I mean person I met in the shop. And by shop I mean their house. And by met I mean stalked.
Yeah, so to get a decent worn highlight, get almost all the paint off your brush then slowly drag it back and forth along the line.

I think youtube has some great vids on most basic techniques... But their often long videos.

Ok, thanks guys! Going to try out the highlighting technique and see if I get a hang of it, might even try one of them rentboys you talk so fondly about.

Looks good for standard infantry. A nice, clean colour scheme.
I would have given them ammo pouches and stuff like that since you already went through the trouble of giving them fancy heads.

I'm doing the lazy thing here and I'm just copying my blogpost from lovehateofpaint.blogspot.se/So here are the, according to me, better pics. I had some sunlight today so I went outside with my girlfriend's camera and took some pictures, I still think there are some improvement needed to be done with the photographing of the minis, these are however far better than the ones from yesterday with the shady LED-lighting. Also, today, they are based! A new pic of the whole squad. Trooper 001 - I wasn't really sure what the thing strapped to the left side of the helmet was, I painted it as an Ork's tusk. Trooper 002 - Clearly my favorite of the lot, all around decent in my opinion. Trooper 003 - I'm not sure if the winged-skull was suppose to be broken or if it's just a faulty casting, otherwise OK, biggest let down was the decal with the numbers on the shoulderpad, since the edge of the decal is clearly visible. Trooper 004 - In my opinion the ugliest of the lot, absolutely drenched in primer and basecoat, so the winged-skull, lens and detail over all was all messed up. Trooper 005 - Pretty OK overall, no big letdowns or anything remarkably good. Todays WIP Grabbed one of my old guardsmen, from my last try four years ago at the guard. He was primed in black but I gave him a Skeleton Bone basecoat with the airbrush and gave painting eyes another try. Basically eyes where the reason I quit painting guardsmen last time around, this time around however it wasn't even that hard, maybe the result wasn't great but I think I might ditch the Forgeworld heads for my regular infantrymen and save them for veterans and the like. Let me know what you think!

Painting eyes: after skin tone but before wash, apply white to the eyes, then a black dot in the middle leave small sections of white on either side, then a thin black line around the whole eye. Touch up mess up areas, as most of the time is inevitable. Then wash with ogryn flesh to blend the eye's recess with the face.
This was passed down to me from a gold daemon winner friend of mine a while back when i couldn't paint my bretonnian's eyes. Apart from the wash as it wasn't available then.

That's almost exactly what I did this time around, I used a needle to get the pupils right. The model isn't 100% ready yet, so I'm not sure how it'll look, but so far it's looking promising, I'm sure that when I've done a couple of these it'll be a lot easier process.

I still feel sorry for the poor bastards since they don't get any extra ammo, knives or even water bottles.

This is becoming more of a work log now, however I thought I'll let you guys see today's work. And much to egon's happiness, he has a knife, ammo pack and a water bottle. Tho I doubt he'll ever live long enough for him to ever use the bottle and if he ever needs to use his knife, he's screwed. But the extra ammo is always nice. Some more of my own thoughts and more WIP over at the blog lovehateofpaint.blogspot.se/I would however, for you guys who don't checkout blogs, like to ask the same questions that I ask there. Which one you like the best, less or more highlighting? Ditch the Forgeworld heads and go for the regular ones? Airbrushing Space marines, easy or what?

Yay! Gear! I've always thought the Cadians look so boring without their gear. With some stuff on they look like proper soldiers.
I really like the last model but the FW heads are also cool. Perhaps use FW heads for veterans and command squads and let the rest go without?

I would give them more accessories and bling (bayonets, ammo pouches, canteens, grenades, etc.) but the painting is sound- they look good and I bet they look even better on the tabletop.
