I have started warhammer again after collecting ages ago. At present I have
5- 10 man squads of infantry (2 cadian,2catachan (catachan are less uniform most just with rifle, some with pistol, one with heavy bolter), 1 steel legion) the Last Chancers (found for a tenner!!!) Various heavy wepons (i think a bolter team and a rocket laucncher) I made a 5 man leader group (some sargent guy, 3 steel legion blokeys) I have a catachan sniper (which i made from other catachan) A Sentitel with a laser (and a rocket launcher I added)
so where should i go from here?
I also have just won 20 more catachan off ebay. (stay away from ebay its addictive I may have jsut bought 60 more cadians). And Tempted to buy the 20 empire milita and give em lasguns.
Maybe i have troop over kill, but I'm too cheap too buy tanks.
Havn't bought a codex yet.

Lol thats a lot of troops! You could try starting a Deathworld Veterans army list. If I remember correctly they don`t have tanks because of the dense jungle terrain.

Acctully, A Guard army dosent need Tanks. You could make them ost basic guard army, or even better, make a penal legion guard army, One that isnt Colonol Shacffers last chancers.
It is possible, there are more than one, they could be anything, and they ARNT allowed tanks.

I do have the Catachan Rule book somewhere. I also looked up the rules for the last Chancers. They seem pretty damm good when in sucidal mode.

Go to Games Workshop and look in the IG section, you can download the old Catachan codex. Other than that, I would definitely pick up a copy of the new IG Codex.
Nothing's more fun than running an infantry heavy army. Give it some meltas, missile launchers, or lascannons for anti tank work and just throw a LOT of lasfire around. Lots of troops means lots flexibility.

e bay is very addictive i've spent a fortune on classics setting up a random regt there are so many classics that ist seams a shame not to include them with regards what to go for next armour always looks good and a leman russ always makes the army look more meaty plus there are so many ways you can make it look cooler then normal, tanks are cool. just find a tank on ebay.

You may want to look at some more sentinels also. The are cheap, can be used as tank hunters (with lascannons and hk missiles) or anti-infantry (autocannon or multilaser). They are fairly fragile, but keep them in cover to avoid them being destroyed too early. Besides, you can field12 in a standard force organization and the scout rule gives them a free move before game start which lets you adjust to any deployment surprises your opponent may have pulled.

Welcome back to the guard =).If i were you i would defiinately get the IG codex first before you do any thing else.See what has changed since you last played. Then i would make sure to get the rule book.or at least have access to one. the next thing i would do would be to get some more heavy weapon and special weapon guys to round out your force. That idea of a penal legion is really cool, like the Salvar chemdogs or something like that.It would make for great fluff on your army too and you wouldn't have to worry too much about throwing away squads since they are prisoners and fated to death anyway.Good luck with what you decide and keep us informed =).

I have to agree, pick up the latest codex, the catachan 1 is free on the gw website but really limits ur army to fighting in total jungle (most peeps will prob decline facing u) and they are too expensive pointswise to be viable when not in jungle. U'll need the IG codex any way. Just MO.

don't bother with the kroot mercs, all they can do is CC, but guard can get themselves better CC support if they really do need it, go for ogryns/stormies if you really need good CC, kroot mercs (in my opinion) is a waste of points and money.

lol Kroot are very cool looking but do you want to have an army thats very close to heretical practices or a pure I.G. army that can rest asured in the Emperors blessings ?Besides that, i don't think that the kroot are really any good other than in dence terrain.

if they are cadian, put them in a special weapons squad, if you got rattlings use them as a good fire support/pinning for your army, same witht the special weapons squad, jsut having more lasguns in the squad

eh catachan, cadian, all the same sniper, anyeays if you only have 3, you need more rattlings to make them leagal, and you can use the catachans in the psecial weapons squads, i'm pretty sure, i don't know if there are any special catachan rules or somthing

Or take light infantry doctrine and u can take 1 per squad. I haven't tried doing this yet tho, so can't say if it is a good stratergy.

The real catachan snipers can reroll a failed wound becouse of their deathworld toxins.I tried a talarin army i was putting together and took light infantry.I took a sniper in each squad and i have to say it didn't impress me at all.All infiltrating is cool but i think that changing out the sniper for a special weapon instead of the heavy weapon would be better but it's not very fluffy.

Actually i found the complete opposite, i use light infantry all the time, and alwasy have a sniper in my squads, it works perfectly for my strategy of slow and confuse the enemy, snipers in sqaud along with a 10 squad of rattlings do some damage, and they pin, which is crucial to my strategy, so while the enemy runs into pinning tests and charging guardmen, my tanks and bassie can do their job

thats cool, i'm glad it worked for you.I probably have to change my tactics up abit.I was thinking about a total infantry, rough riders and sentinals only, no tanks for my talarin army.I was using the docs straight out of the book amd i infiltrated within 12 - 18 inches of some necrons. In theory i guess it should have done well but i was never able to pin them.Maybe with an army that isn't fearless or all units have a 10 ld might be better.

ah, yes you can't really pin mindless skelatal robot slaves ;D most other armies, (exluding high armor/LD races, SM, deamon hunters, necrons, etc.) this works out for me.
but i play orcs, and i have to say, playing orks with tanks and bisilisks and snipers galore is extremly fun, they get pined so much cause of there leather armor and they don't have a great LD, so while they are sitting ducks, they get a nice surprise.
