Drop troopers on a doomed mission? I'd have thought a wealth of opportunities on a start point. Start in the back of a valk - always good to build it up......

Are you struggling with the narrative or with filling in the background for the unit?

No worries. ;D
@scotti: A few things to get you started on fluffing out the core of your regiment...
- What is their homeworld like? Is it a proxy earth, with a strong level of tech development and a good mix of cities, farmlands, deserts, arctic tundras, jungles, etc? Does it have less environmental diversity, being dominated by towering hive cities, endless deserts, or hostile glaciers? Remember, there are billions of planets out there, so even something that only have a one in a million chance of existing would be represented at least a few times in the Imperium. Have fun with details, like gravity levels, how long their day is, etc.
- What's the planet's name? Make up a nonsense one that you like the sound of, or run various words through google translate into latin or other languages until you find something you like.
- Where are they in the Galaxy? Are they near the Eye of Terror, or the Maelstrom? Have they fought Orks on Armaggedon or the Tyranids on the eastern fringe? Google "40k Galaxy map" and pick an area you want them to be in. That area will help determine what enemies they've fought for your battle honors.
- What are their victories and defeats? Have they been annihilated and reconstituted? Are they a fresh founding? Generate names for half a dozen worlds or so using the same system I mentioned earlier, and figure out if the battles went well or not, did your regiment play a key role, etc.
- Do they have any friends or rivals? Both within the guard and without, they have probably developed friendships with units they've served beside, as well as made enemies. Again, pick a world name at random, or use one of the established worlds like Cadia or Catachan, give the unit a number, and decide what type they are (armor, infantry, etc). Your people can make derogatory references to units they don't like throughout the campaign, or encounter a friendly one later on.
- Fill in details. How faithful are they? Do they use the sign of the Aquila instead of a salute, have loads of priests, etc? Or are they slacking slightly in their dues to the Emperor? Do they hate abhumans, or not care one way or another? Is it a mixed sex unit, or mono-gender? What are their local profanities and oaths? You can pick what you want here, and bounce it off us if you want to make sure it's okay, but there's so much variety in the IG you're probably safe doing what you want.
