Gentlemen,
I am playing a friend soon with my 1500 point Guard in a campaign game and I want to try and neuter a couple of his options before he gets his well oiled machine rolling.
His usual load out -
HQ
Autarch
Farseer
Elites
Fire Dragons in transport
Wraitguard w/ Warlock (shielding the HQs)
Troops
Dire Avengers w/ Wave Serpent
Dire Avengers w/ Wave Serpent
Fast Attack
Shining Spears
Heavy Support
Falcon Grav Tank
He generally invests the majority of his points in his HQ psykers to give re-rolls.
I am thinking of trying an Alpha strike with 3 sentinels with lascannons and a Vendetta all with H/K Missiles, supported by a Vindicare Assassin to deal with his war walkers and bright lance grav tank.
I can start with the sentinels, 3 missiles and lascannons should be enough to take down at least two of the war walkers, the Vindicare Assassin can take out the tank with a well placed turbo-penetrator shot and the Vendetta can have 3 twin linked shots and an H/K to mop up the walkers, or have a pop at a transport or his wraith guard.
The other idea is to take his transports out asap and have him march into my templates. - 5 mortar squads, a full Griffon battery and a Russ.
Does anyone have experience with trying alpha strikes / outflanking? I have never tried it before and would greatly appreciate any advice you have.
Cheers!
DBB

Firstly, it's not an alpha strike if you're not striking before your opponent has a chance to react.
Secondly, you'll want to take an astropath to make sure that your Sentinels and the Vendetta come in as soon as possible, and where you need them. I'd leave the Vindicare behind, seeing as you'd need an allied Grey Knights detachment to field him, and they get expensive really quickly. Replace him with a few lascannon teams; they'll be more useful.
Thirdly, I suggest bringing more than one Russ. Wraithguard don't like them at all (in fact, they're pretty much universally despised by anyone on the receiving end), and you'll be forcing him to be spending one of his Fortunes each turn on his HQ bodyguard, re-rolling 5+ cover saves (assuming he's smart, and takes Conceal as his Warlock power).
Other than that, crack his transports and wipe the floor with the occupants. Eldar may pack a punch, but they die just as easily as Guardsmen for twice the price (or more, in the case of Aspect Warriors).

Great advice, Sharps, thanks. It's been 2 editions since I last used an assassin, so I'll drop him without having to worry about it. Astropath is already in, I should have listed my own options in, so apologies there.
I have a two Russ squadron I can bring to bear and a couple of Hydras, so I'll light him up and let the pie plates drop. (using all three heavy slots with 3 griffons, 1 or 2 LMRBT and or 1 or 2 Hydras). Just have to fiddle with the numbers to try and get everything in under 1500.

Hydras are good in this matchup, since they deny the Jink Save on the Skimmers (and thus make Fortune useless to protect them), generally kill by stripping Hull Points rather then getting Damage Results (Negating Holofields), and being unaffected by the Wave Serpent Force Fields since they're only S7.
I'd probably go down to Autocannon on the Sentinels as well, maybe even MultiLasers. On AV10 with only 2 Hull Points, it's all about racking up as many Damage Results as possible rather than worrying about trying to blow them up with Pens.
As mentioned, Russes are ideal for clearing out WraithGuard, and the possibility of Scatters puts some fear in the HQs behind them as well.

I'm not sure hydra's are the way to go as they would have to snap fire at the skimmers. For a good alpha strike I'd be thinking along the lines of manticores, basilisks, and loading up all tanks with HKs. This way no matter where he is on the board you can drop pie plates on hit turn one and HK what ever emerges from the dust on turn two if nothing is in LOS. The griffons would be very handy to pair with a basilisk in this way.

Skyfire also works against skimmers (BYB pg. 42, "Skyfire").

for some real alpha strike ally in an armoured battalion vanquisher command tank+another leman russ of your choice. you can give the vanquisher the ID shells, quickly taking care of his HQ

Thnks sharps, not sure how I missed that one. Now I'm starting to think hydras are going to be a staple in my lists against Dark Eldar and Eldar.
