My reorganized Cadian Jungle Fighters had their baptism of fire today, in a 1000-pointer. I fielded a Deathworld Veterans list (circa 2000 - to follow along google Codex Catachans and open the pdf on GW's site) and my opponent fielded the new Tau.
Me:
Colonel with four Guardsmen, two meltas and a powerfist
One seven-man assault squad with three plasmaguns
Two platoons, each:
- Captain with plasma pistol and power sword
- Two ten-man squads each with a melta and heavy flamer
Two Deathworld Sentinels
One six-man patrol squad with a melta
Two booby traps -- one plasma charge, one shredder mine.
My opponent fielded:
An XV8 Commander
Two separate XV8s
A squad of four XV15/25 stealth suits
Two large Fire Warrior Squads
19 Kroot, including a Krootox
Four Pathfinders
One Hammerhead
We played on a four-by-four table, liberally strewn with aquarium plants and adding:
- A stream in my corner deployment zone
- A village in his deployment zone
- A jungle-covered hill in the center
- A zone of dangerous terrain
- And two trails.
He deployed his tank in the village, one FW team in a house, the other units just outside the village, and infiltrated his Kroot onto the hill.
I infiltrated just about everybody, spreading them along the two board edges adjacent to my corner, and put the patrol squad in ambush in front of the Kroot.
The game was fairly bloody in the early stages, because we both had so many units it was hard to place them farther than twelve inches apart. Cover made the difference.
My assault squad was halved by one of the XV8s (with a flamer!) but stuck around, while my shredder mine killed three of the Pathfinders. I made the mistake of assaulting, thinking my WS4 would be great versus the Tau and forgetting that they can snapfire (a lot) into me now. Though the combats continued and I gradually won them, I afterwards stayed out of CC and used my meltas, heavy flamers and lasguns to good effect. Managed to kill all three battlesuits, but only got one kill point because they all had ejection seats and I only caught and killed one pilot. I learned how deadly glancing hits can be with the hull-point rules when my Sentinels were shot up by the Kroot rifles. I also managed to blow up the Hammerhead with close-range melta fire.
At this point he decided his army would retreat and so we changed the scenario -- his army would try to reach an Orca dropship and a Devilfish that turned up to rescue his survivors. They made it, though the Devilfish and its would-be passengers had a narrow escape when I missed all three melta shots at it.
All in all, a fun and very different game! Will try to have photographs next time.
