We rolled dawn of war with the Emperor's Will mission no night fighting. I never played Tau new or old so much we be a learning experience. I won first turn and deployed on the top behind the defense line. Immediately I regretted how I deployed, but oh well. He set up on the bottom.
Here is a shot of what the board looked like at the start:
Note that the first three photos are recreations via the save I made in Vassal. The last photo is from the game. You can tell because I forgot to add in long strike, who started behind the crisis suits. I expected the fire warriors to be a bigger threat so I had the ap 4 cannons when I built the list. I reasoned that my reserves would be the ones to take out the broadsides. So my first targets were the pathfinders and longstrike. He moved his pathfinders up in the scout move.
Catachan Turn 1: Griffon scattered off the pathfinders. Basilisk hit and killed 3 on the left one. Manticore failed to penetrate longstrike. Autocannons and Snipers got three more pathfinders on the right thanks to fire on my target. I was sure they would run or get pinned. Unfortunately, no they did not. I knew I was in trouble because I failed to accomplish anything.
Tau Turn 1: Everything moves up except for the far broadside team. Markerlights tag the Manticore and longstrike gets his first blood kill. It explodes, but my guardsmen survive. Broadsides on the bottom tag the Basilisk and it also explodes and kills a sniper. The broadsides on the top slay a few guardsmen. I failed every cover save on then vehicles.
Here is a shot of the board:
Catachan Turn 2: Stormtroopers, Marbo, and the Vulture come in from reserve. In another stroke of bad luck I learned how strong interceptor can be verse my reserve heavy list. Marbo and two stormtroopers are killed (one melta) as they deploy. I was going to killed the bottom broadsides with Marbo to stop skyfire so much for that plan. Stormtroopers whiff and fail their morale check and fall back several inches. Vulture wounds 1 broadside and kills a drone. Everything that could go wrong that did up to this point. Things are looking pretty bad. The only saving grace was the griffon killing 10 fire warriors in a single blast. The remaining two run off the table.
Tau Turn 2: He advances his guys some more and spreads out his fire warrior line in the back. And his commander comes in from reserves with a direct hit right next to my line. Vulture gets glanced. And longstrike submunitioned my guardmen blob, but they hold losing an autocannon. His commander team kills the platoon command squad.
Here is a shot of the board:
Catachan Turn 3: Harker and the Vendetta arrive. He tries to intercept the Vendetta and scores a glance and a weapon destroyed. I move it into position and drop of my Veterans. Vulture moves up right on top of the broadsides in front of them. I move my CCS to get in firing range of the Commander. I scored a 5 on outflank and put Harker right next to his objective. Stormtroopers regroup. During shooting, I FRSRF the blob and two crisis suits go down on the team nearest the griffon. Combined shooting from the vets and from the CCS kills two of his commanders suits. Stormtroopers snapshot a melta and longstrike and whiff. Harker lets loose and kills around 7 fire warriors. Vulture finishes off the two broadsides and their drone. The Vendetta whiffs. Griffon kills the pathfinders near longstrike. It is starting to turn around a bit. Unfortunately, his fire warriors don't run.
Tau Turn 3: He moves his commander back and his fire warriors nearer to the river. From here, fire warriors take harker down to 4 models, but they hold thanks to cover save and going to ground. He only got enough marklights to increase BS. Vulture is penetrated and it gets crew shaken by the broadsides. Longstrike submunitions the CCS and guardsmen blob. Look out sir saves the commander and the blob holds.
Here is a shot at the board:
Catachan Turn 4: I move the storm troopers and the vendetta to try to get a shot at longstrike. Stormtrooper has side armor, Vendetta front. Vulture moves down to strafe the warriors. The CCS retreats behind the griffon.I try to move my shotgun vets nearer to the defense line, but they only move two inches. Vendetta whiffs on Longstrike. Melta finally penetrates and scores and immobilized, which was probably the worst one at this point. Vulture and autocannons tear into the firewarriors near the river. They break with three models left and run an 3 inches towards the board edge. Griffon kills two fire warriors near Harker, but they hold.
Tau Turn 4: His firewarriors don't regroup, but he forgot to roll their run. Longstrike submunitions the CCS killing him and grabbing slay the warlord. His commander fires and kills two stormtroopers before jumping up towards the aegis line again. The stormtroopers hold. The fire warriors with pathfinder help, kill two of harkers troopers including harker himself (no luck feel no pain), but luckly they hold and I risked not going to ground to score. It paid off barely. Broadsides hit the griffon once. He rolls and in the only time having open top has ever been advantageous scores immobilized instead of weapon destroyed.
Catachan Turn 5: I move my Vulture past the fleeing firewarriors and take aim at the other squad. Harkers two vets move towards his objective. I put the Vendetta into hover to get a good side armor shot. And move my squad of shotgun vets to ensure that the commander is their nearest target. During shooting, the melta penetrates and stuns longstrike. The Vendetta penetrates and glances and it explodes wounding the stormtrooper who fails his save. Vulture killed the last three fire warriors and my opponent surrendered.
Here is the final shot:
At the end of the game, It was two objectives and linebreaker for me. Slay the Warlord and first blood to him. 7-2 Catachan victory.
Post Game: This game was pretty ugly. The only reason I won was due to inexperience of my opponent and a few lucky saves at the end. I was pretty unlucky on the front half, but I think I made several foolish decisions. The complete failure to kill longstrike until the last turn is what cost me a ton as well. The broadsides are a pain. Being able to fire intercept when you need it and still have a main weapon for your its awesome.
From an army perspective, it seems like reserves and flyers are the wrong way to go verse Tau (minus the Vulture, which is never a mistake ). I was worried about Hammerheads, but I think I would have been better of with a AV 14 Leman Russ and some more artillery.
